Jewelry Question - sell separately? Or...

... does it not make any difference?

I have this aquamarine ring and pair of earrings (I know, I will take better pix) that I really must sell now to get some $$ to my step-mom. I got advice from some of you before (particularly Mary Alice - thank you!) and had planned on selling them together as they were purchased as a set ... but then I wondered if there’s any reason to list the earrings and ring separately.

They were made by H Stern in Portugal in 1979. The ring is white gold with ten diamonds and the earrings are white gold with 22 diamonds. I have the # of carats on the diamonds... etc. J

And is it important to find out the ring size? My instinct is to sell them together.

Thanks

I would sell them together as a set. They are so pretty!

Don't forget to weigh them and add the weight to the auction. Right now gold is $912.70 an ounce. (Just went up 20 cents since I started writing this :) )

If someone is interested in buying them to wear for themselves they will want to know the ring size. Most people will get it resized but they will want something close to their finger size.

If they are buying for resale--it won't matter.

Google ring size charts. You can print them off and determine the size.

Beautiful set! I would sell them together. I wouldn't seperate them. They deserve to be together!

I'm here to make money to survive on, too. We went from two good jobs to no jobs. Just getting by is hard now....

It is hard to part with something so beautiful.

Best wishes,

Vicki

They are lovely. My first instinct is to sell them separately. Some people don't wear earrings. I think this will make you more money.

I would definitely take to a jewelers. They will have a ring sizer and it is important to know the size. However, this is what I put in my jewelry auctions: The ring is a size ____ but can be sized to any size by your jeweler. Under condition, I usually say...the ring is in very good pre-owned condition and has been gently cleaned however if you want it in "like new" condition or appearance, please take to your jeweler to be cleaned and buffed.

You can say that all stones seem to be secure and the prongs are in place?? May want to have your jeweler verify this while you are having sized.

Ooooh....thats beautiful!! I'm inclined to say keep together, for the sake they've been together for years....but, I'm a sap.

I would sell them as a set first for a fixed price...for reasons Ang also stated. I just keep remembering on the Antique's Roadshow too. "If you would have had the set..."

But i am not a jewel expert.

Well thanks everyone, I REALLY appreciate the help. The poor lady is 97 years old and is "out of money." She gets $1,200 a month social security and that's it. She has sold many of her possessions and called me the other day to ask me what I wanted of my Dad's. Of course it's hard to ask for anything that might take away from her comfort.

She absolutely refuses to come to Vermont (cold) as I would look after her.

Since eBay is doing that "free" listing thing for the first five auctions - I might just list as a set fairly high. I have an H. Stern appraisal (I think it's an appraisal .... it's in Portuguese) from 1979 for $5,200 for the set. I'll start it somewhere around $1,500? She purchased them in the Ritz Hotel in Portugal, so of course she paid top dollar.
