Jimmy Hourihan tweed coat dating help

Hi there everyone,
This is the second really nice coat I've had by Hourihan....the company is still active and has been for 50 years...which subtracts to 1962 (if my muddly morning math is correct). Because they are so 'traditional' in many ways I'm finding it hard to date, but this one 'seems' 1970s/80s to me, I think my sister had one very similar in the 70's. I'm going to write to the company re: labels, but wondered if anyone has thoughts on this one.
Thanks again.
Lauren

Hi Lauren,

As you say, coats - especially with traditional styles - can be hard to date. That's why the labels and construction can be so helpful. I think the first coat is early to mid '90s - a '60s one would be better made (I'd expect bound button holes rather than just stitched ones) and a '70s one wouldn't be so restrained in it's styling. The labels look more modern too. I generally associate these "Audrey Hepburn" styles with the '90s.

I think the second one is slightly older - maybe late '70s to early '80s. It's a great colour, and I really like the back view of it.

HI Mary Jane, the coat is 44 inches form the back of the neck....it has a size 16 uk (?) tag but is definitely more of a 10-12....
I contacted the company and they were very prompt in responding and asked for photos to identify the coats for me!

The sizing difference would certainly concur with a 70's dating in my experience, I wear a UK 8/10 and always a 70's size 14. They went very slim in the 70's! courtesy of that extra fitted shape in the torso. It relaxes again into the 80's (probably due to the baggy styles) with maybe only 1 size smaller.

I agree with Melanie - the size label suggests it is a '70s. I hadn't realised it had a size label, it affects my dating so if you can please show all labels next time it will be more helpful. Thank you.

Sorry about that Nicole. I hadn't (as I am often guilty of) thoroughly examined the edges and there is a very small white tag with 16 on it. I'm getting better with checking alterations, but often miss little labels, especially if they are between the lining and main fabric. I've had a few garments with those little cotton tags seemingly randomly placed on a seam...both 'mexican wedding' style dresses I've had had them.

so the Hourihan company got right back to me...so responsive and nice....here's what they had to say:

Hi Lauren,

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you – I needed to talk to Mr. Hourihan. As the company has gone through many changes over the years we don’t exactly have records of this type of thing, we just rely on his memory. He reckons the beige coat (jpeg attached) is from the early 80’s – and the blue/green one is from the early 70’s. They both look great and seem to have stood the test of time!

Hoping this information helps you.
Best regards.
Cathy
