Joyce of California Shoes

Hi,

I am trying to date these vintage shoes that I recently purchased with a huge lot of clothing, shoes and purses. I think these may be from the 1950's, but I could be wrong. I couldn't find a whole lot of information about when this brand was being made. These shoes are in new condition and I think they could be worth something to the right person, so I don't want to just put them on eBay before I try to value them.

Thank you so much!!

Joyce shoes (California) Ltd were sold all at quality department stores in the UK throughout the 1940's, the last advert I have seen for them is from 1959. Nearly all are wedge shoes that vary little in their basic shape over the years. Some of the non wedge shoes were made by other manufacturers under the Joyce name.

The 1947 Joyce advert shown here describes a leather shoe collection called 'Ruffglove' '...subtle contrasts of texture between the smooth and the sueded sides.' and shows a wedge shoe with a peaked collar. The last advert from 1950 also shows a similar printed lining material. This series of adverts is also useful for showing how the square toe was in and out of fashion throughout the 1940's, generally dying away toward 1950. On balance I would place your wedge shoes as postwar 1940's.
I am unsure if the branded heel tip and extra lining piece are original or later refurbishment, as some companies offered a service where they would take back and repair/recondition your shoes purchased from them, and those two are particular areas that typically get well worn.

I would like to know what is written under the Joyce stamp on the sole, as it looks like a patent no. If it is a british patent we can get a date they cannot be earlier than from the number alone. I did a patent search for Joyce but there are 1400 results so I'm not going through them all! :D

What would they be worth, and how would you sell them? I usually do eBay but I haven't sold a lot of vintage clothes.

We cannot give valuations here. You can check ebay solds for similar period and style footwear. They are not a particularly exciting style for this era but they look to be in very good condition for their age.
