Hi again ! Love this forum !! I have this Judith Leiber bag that I really need advice on. I've never bought/sold one before or had one in my possesion. I was wondering if this one is vintage ? The only one I found similiar was online on antiques roadshow, different color of shell.RoadShowPic

Also sadly, it is broken (devastated). Since it's made out of a natural shell I have no idea to go about fixing it. I have the extra pieces, I imagine maybe a jewelry shop ? I've attatched pictures of the inside and out and the sig.

So I'm asking if this is vintage ? or re-issue. Advice on if, and how I should fix it.

Thanks so much everyone !

It would probably not be cost effective - but if it were mine , and I wanted it restored, I would contact Judith Leiber and find out if they do that sort of thing. I don't think glueing the broken pieces back will work.

They could probably tell you when it was made, as well.

Good luck!

The May 10, 1976 New York Times had an article about Judith Leiber bags made from shells. The bags pictured had feet and handles that resemble yours.

I, too, found a not-very-badly-damaged Leiber bag, which I sent to the firm to be repaired. It primarily needed regluing, but they sent it back saying they couldn't repair it because they didn't "have the parts needed to repair it" (all it needed was glue). I took it to a trusted local shoe repair store and he repaired it beautifully, quickly, and durably.

That is a difficult break. A clasp or hinge is easier. I would be tempted to contact the company and provide photos - plus a photo of the pieces seperately. I wouldn't just "send it in". That would be my first try. If it were repaired reasonably, someone may still want to buy it to carry it perhaps or as a conversation piece if you attempted to sell it, but of course wouldnt bring maximum price

Thanks so much for the responses ! The Judith Leiber site had an email for repairs. I sent in pictures, haven't received a response yet. If that doesn't work out I'm going to take it to a private repair shop.

I got a response from the Judith Leiber co. So nice and helpful, although they couldn't fix my bag. They said its from the early 70s, and were discontinued due to their fragile nature. They sent me these images of other shell bags that are at the MET. All really beautiful, just wanted to share.
