Just a belt question...

Hello

Do authentic 1950's/early 60's dresses ever have a tie belt or should they have a buckle belt?

A dress that I like is being sold as an original 50's dress but I think it may be an 80's. The tie belt has me wondering...

Thanks everyone.

Thank you Mary. Just finished googling and cannot see any 50's dresses with a tie belt so my guess it's probably not a 50's...

I looked through "Fashions of the Fifties as Found in Sear's Catalog" and found several dresses with ties - mostly rope ties and some ribbon ties. Not self belt ties but that doesn't mean there weren't any. Does the dress have any labels? Does it have a metal zipper?

Also Swirl dresses have self ties as well, albeit a wrap style of dress so ties are pretty integral to the design!

Hi again.
Belt is in the same fabric as the dress. No zipper mentioned, it has buttons running down the back of the dress. No label mentioned either so I just wrote to seller to see if there is one.
Linn, I just googled the book you mentioned and saw some of those dresses with tie belts. I wish I could post an image of dress but not my photos...

Seller has replied. Apparently it belonged to a lady who passed away in her 90's. The label is Sphinx. Anyone familiar with this label? 80's?

I think you need to see some label pics.

Just today I listed an early '60s dress with a self-covered tie belt -you can see it here.
