hello all,

really, really bad with hats, as they don't sem to sell that well for me - quite possibly because i am listing in the wrong ebay category due to complete lack of instinct datewise :BAGUSE: - but am running out of storage space... so thought i'd run this by you to see if i am way off.

mossy green felt cloche (or is the brim too big for it to be called a cloche?), c. 1930ish?

it wouldn't suprise me if i have it pulled too far down/not far enough so do tell me if so.. and correct date / millinery terms very welcome!! :)

thanks! back with another shortly.. :)

The problem is, they did that style of hat twice, once in the late 1920s up to and including 1930, and again in the late 1950s into the early 1960s. This one of yours looks almost like a late 1920s one but it isn't. The wide band and large bow are typical of the late 50s-early 60s ones, and the vertical seam in the crown is a give-away as well. In the 1920s they wouldn't have used the vertical seams on the crown but rather lateral seams. I am trying to think if I have ever seen a 1920s cloche with vertical seams but I can't think of one example.. also the crown is just a titch too shallow in proportion with the brim. The 1920s cloche's are generally a little deeper with a narrower brim, unless there is a huge brim, in which case the crowns are sometimes shallower but in this case the proportions are ever so slightly off for the 1920s. Yours is definately a late 1950s-early 60s example.

I had a Frank Olive hat a while back that couldn't decide if it was a fedora or cloche. It was oddly in between, and i think i recall it being from the same era. Cute hat!
