Just Curious about this (?) clutch

This is woven straw - has a little strap on the back, for gloves? It has an extra pocket inside and is actually very nicely made and it’s pristine. No tags of any kind. And the small container came with it too - It would be the perfect size for a zippo... or matches? Would this be a 50s/60’s clutch souvenir purse of some kind? It’s about 10 inches by 6 inches.

those're fabulous colors, Amanda! we always assumed the small size was for coins, but would hold seashells or cigarettes, too.

could be carribbean or hawaiian, or mexican, most likely. souvenir ones usually had BERMUDA or whatever on them, but maybe yours is just classier.

i think its ADORable!!

the handle across the back, is styled on the tea dance bags, slip your palm through and hold the back whilst holding your partners shoulder..no dancing round handbags in the Ritz and other Palais of early 20thC london

It looks to me like it is made of Lauhala - the dried leaves of a tropical tree called a Hala tree - that are soaked and then woven into baskets and other products. I think it may be from the Phillipines It doesn't look "Hawaiian" in style - to me. I think '60's is a good possibility but could be newer.

The tree is called a Pandanus in places other than Hawaii. I have two in my yard overhanging the pool. They are really messy! Here's a link about them with a few pictures:

The fruit turns orange and then breaks apart. The Hawaiians used them - dried as paint brushes. They are still used as Christmas tree ornaments.
