I have this Caribbean island type dress with huge fruit appliqués. On the inside are paper remnants. I've never seen this before and I'm curious as to why they would have done this - anyone?
It could be velleen(aka stayflex...) which gives support to fabrics. Velleen is softer than paper but it could have dried out?
Or maybe the person who embroidered it drew their design on the paper as a template and only some of it came away?
Paper helps keep the fabric from buckling up as you stitch the appliques down. Sometimes I use tissue paper. Usually you try to tear it away when finished. There are commercial products that are sold just for this.
