Kid leather/suede and metal purse & handbag - 30s?

Just wondering about the date on this adorable little handbag, in the softest kid leather (suede outer) with metal fastening and chain handle... this is threaded through large eyelets and attached to a dinky matching purse.
Stamped Engl. Patent 17197, I haven't been able to find corresponding info online ..

It looks Edwardian to me - love the big grommets - it has a very steampunk look to it.

Some information about old English patent numbers, from 1852 to 1915.

With that number the patent must be prior to 1916, as from January 1916 they started numbering them from 100001. Of course the bag could still be later than 1915.

Great information Ruth! I agree with Edwardian, it's a lovely purse and I love how the inside purse is attached through a chain.

I thought it might be earlier than I originally posted, but know very little about the Edwardian era so thanks guys! It's so so lovely, the softest leather I've ever felt, and I'm amazed there isn't rusting to the chain... Anyone know how to help lessen rust damage on suede? There's a little on the back where it must have been stored against something poorly.
It's a pity there's some damage to the inside, but I think the design kind of makes up for it! Has anyone seen anything similar for sale? I love it, but would never use it so will be putting it up in my shop in the new year.. haven't found any point of reference for value so far..!
