I purchased a coat in an antique store for $10. The label says "Ombre-Karabaa" It is long, , multi colored grey wooly fabric (looks synthetic) Very nice lining, Has a single very interesting button at the top 2" diameter and looks like Zodiac symbols. Very large shoulder pads and wide shoulder width. The label says "fabric by H&H. I would appreciate any information on this coat. Thank you very much Annette

Thanks Annette. Remember to reduce the size to around 500 pixels. It's just gone 1am here in the UK so I'm off to bed. I'll hopefully catch up with your thread tomorrow. :asleep:

In one of the newspaper databases I found only three ads for Ombre-Karabaa coats and the ads were all from the summer of 1939. Two of the ads were identical and mentioned:

"...enjoy almost identical features in "Volgalam" "Alaskan Kurl" "Ombre Karabaa" "Kara Pursian" and "H and H Hudson Seal" fur fabrics at our low prices."

The third ad mentioned:

"Ombre Karabaa" -- A fine quality Alpaca fabric simulating the genuine ombre krimmer!"

So, what the heck is an ombre krimmer? Off to look it up...

Annette, your best bet to post photos is to upload them to a free hosting service like photobucket, then copy & paste the image codes here. If you attach from your computer, you can only attach one at a time. If you are using a hosting service online, you may be copying the direct URLs and not the image codes, which is what you need for this board.

Looking forward to seeing the coat!

Last try until tomorrow

I am not good at the photo stuff. Thank you for all your info. If this does not work I will try tomorrow. This coat is beautiful and just wanted to know more about it. Thank you all! Annette

Coat

It sure does! I have had an affinity to things from the 30's and 40's my whole life and had a feeling that I should pick this up. I live in Southern CA so I don't know when I will ever use it. I will keep it though along with all my collectibles from that era. I don't want to sell, but any idea what value this has? Obviously not the $10 I paid for it in Minnesota!
Thank you for your research and time. I think this is fun stuff myself!

Lynne,
This coat is definitlely synthetic so no worries about the lammies! I would have passed if that were the case!

It's a gorgeous coat Annette. I've recently sold a chocolate brown, faux fur 40's coat with very similar shoulders and shape to yours for £150 (GBP) which is about $240 USD. And mine didn't have a nice label like yours! :icon_dante:

Is the fur curly or wavy?

I'm thinking along the lines of curly lamb, but the color is leaning toward chinchilla.

Be cautious with the term "synthetic" - for me "synthetic" is the same as "fake" (in other words, not a natural fiber), and it probably isn't a fake fur. The ad Lynne found said "Ombre Karabaa" -- A fine quality Alpaca fabric simulating the genuine ombre krimmer!". I would guess that it is either alpaca pelt or an unusual fabric woven from alpaca wool. If you can see the back of the coat (inside the lining) it will be easy to tell if it is a pelt or a fabric.

I think an alpaca fabric would be more desirable (and more valuable) than a fake fur.

ETA: I wanted to add that I have never seen alpaca pelts used like lamb pelts, so I would tend to think it was an alpaca fabric as advertised, but I don't know of any reason why alpaca pelts couldn't be used like lamb pelts.
