Don't mind me... I'm just a newbie butting in.:D

I looked up the RN number of the cami and found out that the manufacturer was A. J. Schneierson & Son, Inc. What's interesting is the the RN is fairly high up on the list, suggesting a pre-1950 (maybe?) issuance of the number. (Below is a link to an ebay seller's excellent guide to lingerie manufacturers by RN.) I'm wondering if the cami is older than the 80s... even though it certainly does look like it came from that decade.

Another interesting bit of info is that the same company applied for another RN much later on, and was issued RN 18369. (Oh, and they were also issued RN 14676, which couldn't have been too long after the RN on the cami.)

All that I could find out about the company is that it went out of business in 1990, at least according to papers filed with the state of NC.

Don't know that any of this means anything, but I'm just getting into a love of vintage, and that includes researching the oddest things till I can't see anymore...

Nope, it's definitely 80's. As someone who was around in the 80's and poking through my mum's drawers for stuff to play dress up with, I remember seeing these types of camisoles.

Also too, they didn't have tumble dryers for household use before the 50's :D

Another clue that it is later (80s) is even the size tag. Garments like this in the 50s would have most likely have had a size such as 32, 34, 36. They wouldn't be s/m/l but a but more exacting.

Pat - sometimes RN doesn't tell us when the garment was made, but when the company started business and closed up shop, or as a bench mark for when they existed.

Good points, Lei and Patentleathershoes! (Kind of a "duh" on the "Tumble Dry"!:D)

I also just found another ebay guide about RN's that indicated that any RN of 13670 and higher was issued no earlier than 1959. (So much for my estimation of "pre-1950" for Schneierson & Son!)

Thank you both for your comments. I clearly have a lot to learn!

Pat, dont be discouraged :)

A lot of folks started off with clothes that they recall being worn in their lifetime (teenagerhood, etc, or mom wore it) to get their confidence and then expand from there. Or they naturally gravitated to a certain era that was before their time but immersed themselves in it. So don't be discouraged. You will certainly find something on these forums that will make you say "oh, i remember those" sooner or later and you'll start to feel very confident.

Aww, thanks, Patent.:) At the moment, I'm mostly interested in vintage lingerie (pre-1960s) and in aprons, tablecloths and other linens (especially hand-embroidered) from the '40s and '50s. I also love vintage bibs, nursery bedding, nursery rhyme samplers, etc., from the '40s and '50s. I realize that apart from lingerie, my vintage fabric-oriented interests are moving away from fashion per se, but there is so much overlapping, and I'm finding this site to be of tremendous help!

I started another thread about a 1980s dress. I have a few clothing items from that decade that I would like to try to sell (my husband has been out of work since Christmas, and I don't work because of health problems)--I found a vintage online store that will buy pieces from the public; and there's always ebay, of course. I just have to continue with my research to be sure I'm not expecting too much for the items. As I read somewhere, "Just because something is old doesn't mean that it's worth much!"

Thank you again for your kind words!

Pat, have you seen the book list I compiled (along with the help of all the VFG'ers who have contributed their fav reads as well!).
The books have been invaluable over the years with helping to learn about different eras. I don't know what I would have done without my books! :)

Feel free to add your own favorite books on vintage clothing to it too!

Thank you, Lei, for directing me to the book list. What a wealth of information is out there... how kind of you to compile so much of it in one handy place!

I stumbled across a resource that I don't think has been mentioned yet in the thread:

Montgomery Ward Fashions of the Twenties, by JoAnne Olian
http://store.doverpublications.com/0486472817.html

Look for the link below the description to view sample pages--8 of them, including several pages of text and a few pages of gorgeous full-color images of ladies' coats, children's coats, and lingerie.

Thank you again for your help!:)
