Now I've heard of black glass buttons being created to replicate Victorian Jet but I've never heard of a glass buckle before, this one I have is 2.5 x 2" When were these used? is it a specific time or a range between decades? (I'm thinking of the buttons here, which I have up on my 1954 harlequin dress, though they could have been reused of course).

Hi,

Looking forward to seeing it. The 1920's seemed to be when I noticed a lot more use of glass buckles. I have quite a few in my collections, all from the 1920s and 1930's. Of course, yours could be older but I have not seen a lot of pre WW I buckles made of solid glass.

Black glass beads were common in buckles, jewelry and clothing from the Victorian times to early 20th century, and they were often referred to as French Jet. But on buckles they were usually prong set into a frame. I haven't seen any poured glass buckles from pre 1900. Solid buckles were usually made of metal, mother of pearl or other shell, or covered in fabric.

Thanks Barbara, it came with a button lot of which I know some are 1930's (I matched them to a blouse I have) earlier I couldn't be sure of as I've not handled any yet. Having said that the pieces went all the way up to 1960's red buckles and flower power buttons just as big!
