Hello, pretty jacket. Based on what I see so far I would date this to the 40s, the fur is not mink, it's kolinsky, and depending on how the cuffs are turned back would be what you call them. For example if completely sewn for clarity I would say sewn back cuffs, if just held by a few threads I would say tacked back cuffs, and if just folded back I would say folded back cuffs that either are lined on the inside or have fur on both sides.

yikes Caryn....is this also Kolinsky?

Wonderful. I can understand why you thought these furs were mink. They are in the same family and Kolinsky feels similar but it is smaller in size. I do love the reddish brown color. I would like to have hair that color. :)

Funny how "mink" and "weasel" bring up radically different images, yet both are very similar phylogenically (if that's even a word!)
So there really is no 'red' mink?
I actually know someone who could probably do that color, you'll have to come to Peterborough, Ontario...

Well, that's not so easy to answer. In the wild mink varies in color from brown to almost black with little bits of lighter fur underneath. Ranched or farmed mink is bred and cross bred though to create many colors from almost black to white and all sorts of colors in between that are not found in the wild so technically if a mink farmer wanted to create a red mink by breeding or cross breeding naturally occurring mutations they might be able to.
