Hi everyone, hope you are all well, just need a bit of help with this jacket! I believe it to be about 1890-1900, it is in very good condition for its age, with no moth damage, the silk lining has been repaired and is shattered in places, but aside from that it has very few issues. Before I sell it on I just want to check the dating is correct, and what the value may b e on something like this? I quickly snapped a few pics (sorry about the quality). The fabric is fine woven wool, with silk trimmings, clicking on the pictures should bring up a larger version. Thank you in advance!

Hi!

OMG that's drop dead GORGEOUS!!!!
I think i need to go get a fan. I am getting "the vapors" LOL
(i love interesting jackety type things, so am not putting you on)

That is not my era of expertise, but certainly someone will be around before long who will know.

One tip though...if you are offering this for sale in the future, and it is not just for your personal collection (well justified if so!), i would be sure not to state "very good condition for age" as there are many items that survive pristine out there. Just "state the facts" and people will thank you for it.

Chris

Thank you Chris for your tips, it is gorgeous isn't it, I kind of fancied wearing it myself! I probably will sell it on, hopefully to someone who collects this kind of thing, and will love it for its age and beauty. Take care Abi

Abi, to me (and i don't specialize in this timeframe so take with a grain of salt), it looks like some sort of over jacket versus a bodice. it almost has a military influence to me. I will see if i can round up the timeframe experts.
Check back later in the day too, you never know what folks might have to say (and its early yet for folks in the US of A).

Are Bishop sleeves referring to that extra amount of material that would sort of hang right behind the wrist, without being a full bell sleeve, etc.?

Jonathan has nailed the date (he's a great nailer! :) ), but just wanted to say how wonderful this looks, and I really think that if this is in good,
wearable condition it would appeal to people to wear today too. Think how fabulous this would look with jeans or slacks.

Sue

Thanks Jonathan.

Sue....i will get out some pictures but the nouveau victorian/edwardian look is coming out for guys this fall in a big way. mixed in with a dash of Mr. Gorey of Addams fame and a hint of Gothic Manor.

I haven't seen it show up so far for ladies, but you know crossover is inevitable.

I though Sue was thinking along the lines of black taffeta skirt as well.

Gads...look at that tail! Sure the collar and front detailing are great, but that pleated and angled tail is to die for!

Now, would this have been worn over a heavy bustle? If so, I wonder if faking a bustle butt to put under the tail woudn't help with the display.
I had an item once that was to be worn over a bustle, so I made a fake one out of a pillow, covered my form with a cloth long enough to cover the bustle and photo'd it that way. It really made the garment stand up and shout. It never hurts to do your presentation as close to authentic as possible, for the slow kids or those not in the know.

Value...dunno, but I sure wouldn't start this one lower than $50!

Wow thank you everybody for all your replies! Very interesting that is called a bishop sleeve - you learn something new everyday! The jackets great, I agree it has a military look to it, its a little small on the shoulders for me, but I originally had intentions of wearing it. Thank you Jonanthan for the accurate dating! Maybe I should photograph it properly and put it in my ebay shop, although I'm never sure how things like this will work out on ebay. Anyway thank you again everyone!

There is some military influence in clothing around the very beginning of the century -- the Spanish American and the Boer war are both going on around then.

As for the bustle, it should not be big bustle, just a gentle crescent shaped pad that gives you a little oomph... 'What God has forgotten we stuff with cotton"
