Let\'s play... \"Getting to Know You\"

"Getting to know you.
Getting to know you, getting to know all about you.
Getting to like you, getting to hope you like me.
Getting to know you, putting it my way,
But nicely,
You are precisely,
My cup of tea.
"

Let's have a Fun Friday and get to know each other. We've had a lot of new friends join recently, and it'd be nice to know a bit about each other--whatever you want to share. Maybe where you live, what brings you to your love of vintage, what's unique or different about your family, or what kind of pet you have! Or, all the above.... It would be really nice to see how many states and countries are represented here--I know we have folks from the U.K. and Australia, at least one or two from Hawaii. Where else do we hail from?

Well, since I've suggested it, I'll start. I live in south-central PA, transplanted here from the cold, snowy Great Lakes & Finger Lakes area of western NY. My love of all things vintage probably comes from spending hours and hours of my mom dragging us around to antique shops and also filling our home with antique, vintage, and reproduction furniture. Late to collecting vintage apparel, though, I've "only" been doing that for some 20 or so years....

A multi-career-ed person, I also am a free-lance marketing communications consultant and writer, and sell real estate part time--when the mood strikes me. And, of course, my favorite homes to list and show are vintage ones--anything from the 60s and older. I have 2 kids and 2 dogs who drive me crazy, and a husband who can, too. Though I don't know what I would do without any of them! Be bored, I guess.

Whew.... more than you ever wanted to know, I'm sure. But giving you some ideas of what I personally would love to know about all of you!

What a great idea Anne! Here goes...

I live in Toronto, Canada and the weather is finally warming up! It's cold in Canada in winter...

Vintage started as a teen from lack of funds, so my girlfriends and I would troll the second hand stores and I always managed to find the really great 50s dresses.

Divorced and now single and loving it! Have a great Siberian Husky and a wonderful family. Just received my black belt in karate too and now regularly conduct self-defense workshops for women as well as running my website of vintage clothing.

Life is good :hiya:

Thanks for posting, and, oh dear, I meant to mention that, yes, we have quite a few friends from north of the border here--many, in fact. Don't want to leave out our Canadian buddies!

Jenn Schulte, 36, mom of 1, wife of 1, vint-o-phile for 15 years, dealer for 7, graphic designer, gardener, VFG minion.

From Moberly Missouri (that's the middle of the state to the right of the middle of the country), lived here all my life, save 5 yrs in college and 8 in Omaha Nebraska (north of the middle) where I found hubby and made son, and started dealing to support my vintage obsession.

I have a BFA degree, worked for a sign shop for 7 years, quit to raise baby, started dealing, started my own design company and do huge amounts of volunteer work as a master gardener for a local mini-train area in our park.

Jenn trivia: The movie About Schmidt was partially filmed a few blocks from my house in Omaha. Several shots were from the outside looking in to the historic home, so they needed to reproduce the wallpaper for the sound stage. The sign shop I worked for got the job, as it was large format printing. Our printer had borders, so I had to cut the edges off of all the prints. You can see the walls it in the movie, right behind Jack-O.
I am SO cool.

ok ME ME ME

Beth 32 mother of three boys, wife of artist, writer, jazz musician and sometimes vintage model known affectionately as Dutch

myself, kinda an artist, once professional bellydancer, turned burlesque girl, turned (now) vintage selling farm girl, from Atlanta area, living in rural Mississippi (holy culture shock batman)

My love of vintage began when I was in a production of Auntie Mame at age 16. I wore an absolute killer brown wool suit in one scene and almost cried when I had to give it back to the wardrobe dept. I began scouring the thrifts for great pieces with lots of drama and quickly became "one of those girls" who wear vintage daily.

I was often followed by curious locals through the grocery store when I first moved out to the farm, they are adjusting ..as I am.

Ooo this is fun! you get so used to knowing each other by their screen name that you forget that there is a real person behind it!!:scratchchin:

Me next!

I'm Leila Marvin (aka Lei for short), 33, mother of Jake, wife of Gary. I was born in Montreal, Canada but moved here in 2000 when I met Gary on the internet in October 1999. I'm horse CRAZY- rode hunters as a teenager and now ride dressage. Got a horse, pony, 4 chickens, a rooster and Pepper the moron dog.:dogs:

I always collected antiques and things from when I was little when my grandfather gave me an 1894 Canadian penny that he dug up in my grandparents backyard.

I started getting seriously into antique and vintage clothing during my late teens- early 20's when I was training to be an opera singer and hated the ugly "Victorian-esque" costumes in the wardrobe department (you know the ones, dresses made from sugar pink nylon with 1890's leg 'o mutton sleeves paired up with 1860's hoops!) that we had to wear for productions and wanted something original to wear to recitals as well. I always sang in original antique clothes!

Then I started C&C when I got pregnant for Jake to sell off some of my massive collection to raise funds to put a down payment on our house and buy baby stuff and the rest is history! :)

I live in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. I live in a 1920 craftsman bunglaow house in the middle of a small town. My business partner is living with me plus a small dog named Jill. I have been working on my garden for a couple of years, I sew, paint and make jewelry. I have loved vintage clothes since the 1990's.

I have had 2 brick & mortar antique shops in the same 1740's building. The shop had a fire in 2005 from an electrical short and another fire in 2008 from arson. So those events have put a real dent in my vintage clothes business since I had to go to work while recovering from the lost of business while rebuilding. We are still rebuilding from the second fire. But the good news is that I have plenty of vintage in my home. I have planned to sell on my website but the job gets in the way because I work odd shifts for 6 days a week.

I am working to make 2009 be the year for my success with my web site. So here's hoping!

It's wonderful reading about everyone--we have quite an eclectic bunch here!

I note that we seem to have quite a few horsewomen here.
Like Lei, I was/am horse crazy and dropped out of college to attend Potomac Horse Center and get my horsemaster's certification. Started working at a show stable, got deathly ill--allergies heretofore undiagnosed. Had to stop working with horses for a living, but continued to ride for many years, stopped while I was in the mid 30s--money, time, messy divorce--you name it, it interfered with riding.

But Lei's (and others') love of horses is starting to inspire me to at least think about riding again. Add to that the fact that both my boys have expressed interest in it, and I just may be hooked again!

Can we get a show of hands for the horse fanatics???? I know there are more than just Lei & me....

I have a shop...Avalon....in Portland Oregon.

I come from an extended family of packrats/clotheshorses.

Thanks to the WWII housing shortage, I have fond memories of the big urban Victorian on a huge lot full of fruit trees and garden where I lived with grandparents, aunt and uncle, their two infants, my parents and my sister, along with assorted animals including a pair of de-scented skunks.

The 5 BR house was heaped with projects and adult toys...my father's Lionel train set, uncle's pool table (both in the double parlor), knitting & needlepoint, jigsaw puzzles, towers of books, stacks of 78 records and fashion magazines.

There was a sewing room, with a straight sewing machine, a hemstitching machine, a pleater!, a mangle, and an awesome HUGE cast iron treadle machine that made covered buttons with a THUNK that shook the house. Upstairs was the 'mad' room, where you went to be alone...with the full sized floor loom that Aunt Olga used for therapy...

I've had a long adult life all spent in the 'counterculture'...opened my first shop in 1966, this is shop/location 5, I think...

Our first shop was so bohemian it has no sign (not even OPEN) for its three years of business and no phone. AND it made money.

Aloha,

I have lived in Hawaii for more of my life than elsewhere, but I too, grew up in the cold Northeast - and while Hawaii is home, I am still "an East Coast girl. " No white shoes for me after Labor Day - or white pants after Sept. 20th! I was born in Boston, grew up outside of Albany, N.Y., went to Boston University, stayed after college and worked, married, moved to New York City, moved to Hawaii ( ex-husband was in the Army for two years.) Settled in Hawaii and then divorced. I decided to stay here after we separated when I went back to Boston in November and hit a blizzard. I remarried several years later. No children but a series of furry ones. This is Katie, the current kitty:

I am an interior designer - mostly retired. I'm a professional member of ASID, taught interior design at UH in the '80's, and did a bit of image consulting back in the '90's. I've always loved shoes, handbags and fashion. Jackie O was my idol! I collected antiques for many years and when I ran out of room started buying and then collecting and then selling (well you know how that goes) vintage costume jewelry. I am fascinated by all aspects of period history - interiors, architecture, fashion, lifestyle, etc. I have a large (and growing) library and always want to know as much about anything I find as I can discover.

I am fairly new to collecting vintage clothing - not purses, hats or jewelry. I am trying to add pieces that I will wear here or when I travel because there is a limit to how many wool suits "I need".

I love this forum, and have learned so much here! I check VFG first thing in the morning, and several times a day after that. We are 2 or 3 hours earlier than the W. Coast depending on DST. I know a little bit about fabric and "periods" from interior design but am amazed at the breadth of knowledge in this group.

I do not ride. I walk almost every day for exercise. I am on the Board of the Hawaii Opera Theatre; love opera, classical music and vintage! Oh, and I love to shop!!! I remember some of the pieces we discuss from the first time around. It's strange to think of the '60's-'80's as "vintage". I wish I'd kept more of my '60's clothes!

Probably more than anyone wanted to know!

Linn
