1940s (or is it 1930s?) Alligator skin shoes (were these considered sandals with the peep toe, open lacing and slingback??)

Judging from the heel would you go with early 1960s on these tapestry heels?

This is a very early pair of Ferragamos.. The patent leather is REAL :) The logo is the first one they he had to my knowledge and there is a very slight platform.. early 1960s?

OK, this is the big one... I can only narrow it down to three eras... 40s, 60s or 70s????
Now because of the color I am doubting the fourties BUT the bottom of the shoe and finishing certainly seems older then seventies... SIGH..

Would those be considered D'Orsay pumps (the first), aren't they? I find that gets more hits than T strap.

It goes without saying that I would LOVE those patent leathers...

On the red ones, I don't think they are 60s. My first instinct is earlier 70s. Could it be possible that they are 70s but the fit and finish is just more high end or from someone who was adept at the older art of shoemaking? I can see where the seed of doubt would be....40s bombshell pinup shoes...which they did have platforms but to me they seem too clunky. I really am confused now too.

D'Orsay pumps.... I will have to look that one up. I wonder where that name came from? Sounds like it was a brand name that was known for thier T-straps? Kind of like Kleenex or Q-Tips?
I think the highend construction is what is confusing me on the last heels. I am just not used to seeing 70s shoes (or really clothes for that matter *generally of course*) of high quality.
So we have two votes for 70s on the red *smile*
Ooooo I like that you think it is a fabulous collection. I buy shoes because I love shoes but for some reason I dislike listing them, I suppose because I know less about shoes then clothes or that I do not retain the information I am given on shoes as well as I do clothes!

Thanks you two!

Michelle

OK, I'll bite :) But warning: more questions than answers -

- Alligator peep-toes: I'm guessing 40's (not 30's) and shoes (not sandals). Wondering how the way the skins are stitched together is actually described.

- Tapestry heels - early to mid 60's

- Ferragamo patent pumps - patent leather - what distinguishes real from faux?

- Red suede platforms - At first glance I thought 40's, definitely. Second glance: um, maybe not... there's something about them that says 70's so loud & clear. Looking forward to learning which voice I should listen to :)

Nice shoes Michelle!

Carolyn

hee, Carolyn...
Yes, I was wondering how I was going to describe the stitching if at all on the alligator shoes.. (not sandals *smile*)
Well so many of the shoes constructed now, even high end $300 and $400 designer shoes are comprised of 100% manmade patent leather and some are very nice but from what I understand patent leather began as just that leather that has been treated with the shine (good lord don't ask me what it is or how its done) they wrinkle quite easily whereever the foot creases and with time it becomes fairly soft and pliable unlike the manmade that can become stiffer with age. You just kind of know by the feel or the soft leather interior if you can tell the interior of the shoe is not a separate construction.
I know others know more but you can also slightly stretch real patent leather where the manmade will always keep its original shape.
The manmade patent leather seems to have no other name so its not like calling pleather leather and being deceiving....
Well, I prattled quite a bit on something I know a small amount about didn't I?

Michelle

gawd, I love, love, love the T-straps--and what size might they be??? :love008:

I'd go with 40's on the alligators & 70s on those red humungous platforms.

Although it seems most everybody agrees early 60s on the tapestries, I just don't know on those--they don't "feel" that age to me, but I am NOT very knowledgeable about shoes (just grew up in the 60s & 70s)

Patent \"leather\"

This may be a really stupid question/comment, but I had never, ever heard of calling faux patent leather shoes or bags just "patent leather" until I started buying & selling on eBay. Am I just a dinosaur of a purist by feeling that one doesn't call it leather unless it is? I call any manmade "patent leather" just "patent" or "faux patent leather" or "patent-leather-look vinyl," etc. Perhaps 'cuz I'm older and remember when most patent leather really was? I was surprised to find out that some folks didn't realize, when this discussion came up on the eBay discussion board once, that there is "real" patent leather and "faux" patent leather.... They thought it was all the same. So, am I "out of it," not "with" current terminology, or what?

Anne (apparently lost & confused in PA)

Another vote for 70s on the red platforms.

Michelle, the Ferragamos look mid to late 60s to me. Do they say "Salvatore Ferragamo inside? Some time in the 60s the label changed from "Creations Ferragamo."

Oh those red ones are to die for.....:wub::wub:

Could one only hope that they are my size????? My feet are small, a size 6 to 6 1/2 in US size.........going to go back up and drowl now............

I'm saying early (1972-ish) on the red platforms as well. I had some really nice, and unusually well made platforms that I bought in 1973. I remember the salesman commenting at the time that he rarely saw shoes made that well anymore. Wish I still had them.

Anne... The T-straps are labeled an 8 measuring 9.5 inches from the inside and are fairly wide for the times (like a "normal" foot of today LOL)
As to the tapestry heels, the heel and toe are what make me think early 1960s, kind of a lady who lunches type of shoe with a handbag to match or some such thing... Is it the tapestry part that does not feel right? Or the heel? As to being a purest about patent leather I AGREE.... A million years ago I worked at a shoe store called Wild Pair and anything shiny was called patent leather on the boxes, in inventory ect... What I usually call faux patent leather is "patent leather manmade upper" or some such thing. In the beginning on ebay I used faux patent leather and got so many emails about it I now do not use that term. So we have to squelch the purest in us for the masses
:D You are not "out of it" Anne, you just know something that most people don't *smile* Carolyn, by the way, when you feel it and see it you will know it is "real" patent leather... a bit like an authentic designer handbag, once your hands are on it you just know...
Lizzie, the label is different then most Ferragamos I have seen, a bit Dali-esque but it does read Salvatore Ferragamo...
Jamie, you are in luck, the platforms are a perfect 6.5 according to a 6.5 sized foot that tried it on *smile* They are HEAVY.... they will probebly add 4 pounds to your scale!
Carol, if only! Right? I think back at some of the things I owned and got rid of in my starving artist days or just thought was not "cool" anymore and I get an upset stomach! Thanks for the more specific dating....

Thanks everyone

Michelle

Well, i just wrote a long thing on patent leather and then my computer crashed. I will have to revive it later. But i agree with Michelle...after having real patent leather in your hands that is verifiable, you will definitely "know" when you run acrossed it again. Patent leather is real leather with a synthetic layer bonded in teh finishing process and polymerized leather is vinyl. When it is nicked, or gets bumps/damage on the edges, genuine patent leather will show through leather like how a regular leather item will get a broken in corner and vinyl will tear or show through white.

Luckily, there are some makers that had the foresight through legalities, to be presitigious, or to just be nice and mark their items "genuine leather", or "genuine patent leather" on the inside

Chris

I haven't searched for it, but I think we had a thread recently about the origin of the D'Orsay pump that might be of interest?

I am thinking 70s on the spectacular platforms, too and later 60s on the Ferragamos. Ferragamo starts in the late 20s, so I wouldn't call those early, more middle of the Ferragamo timeline.

Hollis

Oh, drat it all on the T-straps! My 9" foot is probably a bit too short to do them justice..... :(

The tapestry heels, to me, look more mid 60s, maybe even late 60s? Look like shoes my mother and my SIL used to wear back then. But, early 60s, mid 60s--not really much of a distinction, though.....
