Hi All,

"It's a Saturday night and I..." Okay, so I'm feeling a little punchy!

Have this two piece suit (about a 12, possibly 14) that is so well made there is no place to cut for a burn test - all nicely stiched and hidden - suggestions are welcome! It is Thai-dyed (or tie-died) onto an embossed fabric - check close up. I think it's silk, but... Unfortunately, no label.

And, the collar reminds me of 70's, but it has these shoulder pads; so would that make it early 80's???

Also little wool red/orange/white number - is that early 70's?

And if someone would check my Marty Modell thread and give another opinion on a timeline, I'd really appreciate it as I would like to list tomorrow.

As always many, many thanks!!!

The second one looks 70's to me, early to mid, maybe? I wore a dress very similar to that to my parents' 25th anniversary party in the mid 70s--that's why I remember the dress so well! The suit looks 80's to me, with the shape of the jacket, but I'm not really sure.... And it's so hard to tell the fabric. Some of those woven polyesters on the better-made stuff in the 80s were so much like silk, it can be hard to tell without a fabric tag. Without feeling it, I wouldn't be so bold as to offer an opinion.... When the seams are all finished off so you can't snip a piece for a burn test, it's really frustrating!

Oh Deborah - I really like the second one! You've been finding some great things :D
I would agree with Anne's date suggestions, particularly with the dress. Suit does look 80s to me too. When was tie die all the rage -early to mid 80s? I've got a terrible memory..

The embossing on the jacket is interesting - I've never seen anything tie dyed over a detailed fabric like that before. It looks almost like a damask.

Thanks Anne. Thanks Harriet.

I think tie dye started in the 70's, but shoulder pads were all the rage in the 80's - so 80's it is for the suit and 70's for the dress.

I actually have about 400/500 pieces, Harriet, that I've been collecting through the years - and I can't seem to help myself as I keep adding. When I have a moment I'm going to check your thread re: organizing for some helpful hints. I should take pictures of my mess (it mirrors my mind these days) and it may make others feel better about their mess.

Deborah

I remember there was a big "hippie revival" at the very, very tail end of the 80s (and shoulder pads were still going strong in 1990). I think it sort of cropped up around the time of the woodstock anniversary. I remember during "spirit week" at school we had different days..wear a particular color day, etc, but we also had "hippie" day. I remember wearing an army shirt over my tie dyed t-shirt, borrowing my aunt's soldier name bracelet. Lots of kids in tie dye and peasant skirts, but you could buy tie dyed shirts everywhere at the mall that year, too.
