Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone had resources for dating vintage they find to be very helpful. I read these forums a lot, but I find so much on Etsy that seems to be wrongly dated to me that now I just find myself confused!!
I’m mostly looking to be able to identify eras of knitwear & crochets better than i have been.

thanks in advance!

Items for sale are so often wrongly dated, that it’s not a good place to do research, unless you know that the seller really knows their stuff.

Looking at patterns or knitting magazines is a good way to do this. Magazines are often dated so you can be very precise, and patterns if not dated, you can tell the era by the look of the models, hairstyles etc.

However home knitted or crocheted items are notoriously different to date, as it’s nearly impossible to know if it were knitted back in the 40s for instance , or later but from a 40s pattern.

If you want to ask for help here with particular items, I’d be very happy to try and help. It’s my subject of special interest, and I do have some knowledge of the history of knitting, and have a few books on the subject. I’m not quite so knowledgeable about crochet.

do you knit or crochet yourself?
