Loretta Young Label

A collector sent these images to me, hoping I'd know about the label. I've seen Sterling items before, and the Loretta Young endorsement is ringing a very faint bell. The set looks 40s (it's a dress and bolero). Anyone have any info??

I haven't seen this endorsement label before but I am not surprised. I think everyone in Hollywood had a label at one time or another! -- GLoria Swanson, Ginger Rogers, Margaret O'Brien, Shirley Temple, Patty Duke, Billie Burke, Zsa Zsa Gabor... to name a few, and there were more too! I wonder if the stars got a percentage or flat rate for the use of their names in endorsing a product.

Or did the studio either sponsor/collect?

Maryalice -- I don't know... however sometimes I think it was the star who tried to make a bit of money as their careers failed -- such was the case with the BIllie Burke and Zsa Zsa... at other times it might have been the studios capitalizing on their stars' names.

In the case of Swanson, it was a calculated business move on her part. She was planning her big comeback - Sunset Blvd - and was working to get all the publicity she could.

The Shirley Temple line was a deal between her parents and a manufacturer. The studio designer was not happy to learn of it!

But some of the others seem to be the star capitalizing on her current popularity. I have a Dorothy Lamour labeled dress that is from the time that she was so hot, and this dress is from the time that young was getting popular.

Thanks, Sydney. That was interesting. I bet Loretta never wore Sterling Frocks!

So with the deco-ish kind of font on the hang tag, the newspaper articles and ads being around the same time range, I'd say the latest it could be is mid 40's, and more than likely is early 40's or late 30's as referenced by the articles/ads.

Thought I'd share this ad I found while looking for something else!
