I am new, but I came to this sight on a mission to FIND out about a vintage dress that actually has two labels...one in the dress and one in the dress jacket. I have also found some VERY interesting information about the Lady who's name is one the dress label. I hope I am doing this right.

First the Label from the Jacket:

I Found out that Marian Hamann of Marian Hamann, Inc. of Jacksonville, Florida owned a boutique in Florida.

In 1941, FASHIONISTAS looked to Marian Hamann for their fashion advise. At least they did in Florida where on August 29, 1941, Marian Hamann, Inc. contributed her first article called Charm Through Clothes on page 3 of The Bradford County Telegraph paper for Starke, Florida.

Article Found Here:

(If you are ANYTHING like me, I WASTED MOST of a DAY just reading and looking at the issues of the paper...I LOVED IT...You can read her next article on page 7 of the next issue, just FYI)

Now, back to the Dress...
Then, upon MORE inspection of the dress, I found a label inside the dress on the side seam

I can't seem to find anything about this label. But also wanted to include that there was writing on the zipper

And last, but not least, the picture of the full suit---I think it is GORGEOUS!!! I just wish I knew more about it..so thank you in advance to ANYONE that can tell me what the second label "A Jefri Fashion" is about and the writing on the zipper.

Hello and welcome to the VFG - judging by your post, you're going to love it here!

Firstly, I notice that you've also posted this to the VFG label thread - this is for adding labels to the label resource, so you may like to delete the other post because we're likely to answer your query here.

Now - for best results, photograph the dress and jacket separately, but it looks to be me as if you have a nice dressy ensemble from the early to mid 1960s but it will help if we can see the style of the dress. It looks rather short, so if you look at the hem, you might be able to tell if it's the original length or not (if you're not sure, you can post photos and we'll be able to help).

The two labels: it sounds as if (thanks to your research) that Marion Hamann is the boutique that sold it, and "A Jefri Fashion" is the manufacturer/designer.

I'm curious about the writing on the zipper: I would expect this to relate to a custom order but the two labels suggest it's a standard manufactured outfit, although of course, A Jefri Fashion could be a local dressmaker. If it were bespoke "3-4-350-2PC-68" (please correct me if I haven't transcribed it correctly" could possibly translate as "March 4th - style 350 - two pieces (garments) - 1968" or some variation.

Are there any other labels? An absence of size labels suggests bespoke again, and it was still common for ladies to get their special occasion wear professionally made in the '60s.

PS, I found quite a few "A Jefri Fashion" dresses and ensembles through Google, so they seemed to have been quite prolific during the '60s.

Thank you so much for replying and I will get more pictures up asap. I also posted first in the wrong place and after I reply here I will go and delete...so sorry for that. Thank you again for any and all your help. I hope you went to the link of the newspaper, I so enjoyed reading the articles and just looking around...

I also found via Google other "A Jefri Fashions", but I can not find any info on who this label was associated with...as you can tell by the information about Marian Hamann, I enjoy the "Hunt", but with this label I have just come up with nothing.

As I mentioned, I am NEW to this, when you mentioned bespoke, does that mean made especially for someone, like Haute couture? As for the length, yes, I know it has been shortened, but I believe they left the original hemline so that it can also be let back out. I am not SURE of this, but it does look like quite a bit of hem.

Again, Thank you Nicole! I appereciate you taking the time to look at and answer this newbies questions!

You're welcome Connie.

Bespoke, as you say, has been made especially for someone but it's not made the high standards of Haute Couture. Only specific companies are allowed to use the term "Haute Couture" to describe their products, and they need to meet strict criteria. Bespoke is much more common, and quite a bit of clothing pre '65 can be described as such - pre '45 even more.

I'm not certain about this so please correct me if I am mistaken, but I think in the US we would use - "custom made" or "made to order" rather than "bespoke" which may be what's confusing you. Custom made or made to order would be made by a skilled commercial dressmaker or tailor. Not to be confused with "Haute Couture."

Thank you so much, both of you, for your explanations. You, were right, I was very confused, and I didn't understand about "Haute Couture". "Custom made" or "made to order"--I get that. But, I really LOVED the "bespoke" also; especially now that I know what it means...sounds pretty nifty!

I was just checking in, I haven't had the time to send better pictures, but, I already had this picture of the shoulder seam...my husband and I differ on the reason for it...I say it is used for hanging the dress and he is of the mind that it was for the bra strap! I just also find it quite exquisite, I LOVE the way this dress is made...when I first received it (as a gift from my Mother in law), I just thought it was pretty and was great for a party I was going to. She always was finding special dresses and also giving me her handbags and accessories to wear. I was too young to actually appreciate the workmanship. I've just had it handing in my closet since I can no longer wear it and got it out the other day and REALLY started looking at the workmanship and that's when I wanted to know MORE about it.

Sorry about going on and on...

Here is the picture I was talking about...

Here are pictures I already have of the dress, but I don't really have any with just the jacket--I JUST wish someone knew who the JEFRI is that the label mentions. It's so odd that I see the dresses with the same label, all different beautiful cocktail dresses, but can't find any info about that LABEL.

Yes, very '60s - and I hate to break it to you but your husband is right: it's for the bra strap.

Also, I'm not in the US so some terms are different there. I suspect Australia picked up "bespoke" from the UK, we also use "custom made" and "made to order" but I like to default to old fashioned terms, even when they're not familiar to others.

Don't worry too much about "A Jefri Fashion" - there are thousands of old fashion companies and many of them do not have much information online, especially if they closed decades ago. The internet is very patchy when it comes to history.

WOW!!! I can't BELIEVE he was right!!! He is going to get a KICK out of that! Thank you so very much! And, I LOVE that you use the older terms, it is very eloquent!
