Lurex and lame

We had this discussion several months ago but I didn't have an opportunity to look it up.
Lurex is a trademark of Rockwood Industries for a metallic and yarn fiber. The reference I used --Fairchild's Dictionary of Textiles (7ed.) didn't indicate when it was issued. I wonder if this was an early metallic yarn that replaced real metallics.

Lame' is any fabric woven with flat metallic yarns. Originally, the yarns were gold or silver; today they can be slit-film, a synthetic metallic, or a metallic/yarn thread.

What a coincidence - I just thought about that discussion too today! In the German fashion magazine from 1958 that I bought at the antiques fair yesterday, there's a Lurex ad:

lurex.jpg

It says that Lurex is a non-oxydising metallic yarn, and that Lurex is only being produced by the Dobeckmun Company, a Division of The Dow Chemical Comapany, Cleveland/Ohio, London and Amsterdam.
It also adds which companies the "end-fabrics" being shown in the ad are by.

For the context - this is not just your normal everyday fashion magazine, this is one only showing couture and expensive fashion, and the ads have an emphasis on expensive things too (lots of fur ads, Swiss watches, Mercedes cars, Lufthansa Senator service, American cosmetics etc. ).

I have a touch of insomnia tonight/this a.m. so looked at the Patent & Trademark site.

There are three relevant postings there (or four - not going back to look). Basically it says the first use was May 4, 1945. Registered Jan. 1, 1946. First owner was Dobeckmun Co.

It was assigned by Dobeckmun to Dow Chemical in 1957.

Over the latter two filings/postings there were numerous assignments ... nine with one and ten with the other - most with Dow or a Dow connection involved. It appears to have ended in 2004 with assignment to a Swiss Bank through the Cayman Islands.

I'm usually more clear than this but there are just too many assignees involved and I'm finally getting sleepy.

You can do the search here: http://www.uspto.gov/index.jsp

Begin with the last listing for Lurex and work upward.

I'm paraphrasing here ... In 1979 Dow Badische (Dow had earlier assigned to Dow Badische) as assignor assigned the mark to Badische Corp.

In 1980 Badische assigned the mark to Metal Film Co., Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Rockwood Industries, Inc., Greenwich, CT.

Lots and lots of assignments. You may wish to look at the above site.

Found out the cause for my insomnia - sick, sick, sick. Good thing about communicating online. You can't catch germs that way.

If I'm repeating what's already known, I apologize.

Anyway, here's a link to the obituary of Karl E. Prindle. It states ... "He also developed Lurex ...." He worked for Dobeckmun and retired from Dow. I assume Dow bought out Dobeckmun.
