Ma Cherie (amour!) - any ideas about label and what to do about discoloured sequins

Hi there

Picked up this gorgeous cardigan - loose knit covered in sequins - and have lots of questions that I hope you can help me with

1. has anyone heard of this fashion house? Is it likely to be ‘haute couture’ or is this just hyperbole!

2. any thoughts around dates? I’ve seen other Ma Cherie pieces online, all heavily beaded, but quite a few of them have a different style label and describe as ‘made in commonwealth’ rather than Hong Kong. Not sure what that’s likely to mean about dates though!

3. A small number of the sequins have gone a funny yellow colour. Any ideas as to why this happens and the best way to correct? I’m assuming have professionally replaced?

many thanks,

jane

With a size label that hints at some kind of commercial/mass manufacture, it's definitely not haute couture :) - so yes, a bit of hyperbole. It can still have been an upscale boutique thought. A lot of beaded/sequinned garments were produced in Hong Kong in the 5os and 60s as far as I know, and Hong Kong was part of the British Commomwealth then, but I'm not sure what the different mentions on different labels might mean date-wise or not either.
I would date your cardigan to the 60s, but let's see what other things, also regarding the discolored sequins (I for myself would leave them as they are).

I'd say 60s as well. and agree, hyperbole on the haute couture...lol. that pink color is great! when it comes to the discolored ones, i would say it kind of depends on how many, and their placement. if it's just a couple and they're on the sleeve or back, then I'd just leave it and disclose where each one is, or, if it's just a couple/three, they'd be fairly easy to replace.

lol - it doesn't help searching when it turns out that Ma Cherie was the name of a rather famous racehorse in the 60s. Once I'd sifted through scores and scores of "Ma Cherie wins again!" articles I managed to get a couple of ads :) We can't enlarge these images by clicking on them, which is a bit pooey, but I'll email them over if requested :)
