Mad Dogs and Englishmen

Bob and I don't have cable so we don't watch any television but we do rent scads of old movies and documentaries. Last night we watched the concert film Mad Dogs and Englishmen about the 1970s tour with Joe Cocker and Leon Russel and Joe's band.

I always watch these things with an eye for the fashions. It was fun to look at clothing on the cusp. You could see the transition from hippie to disco and even punk starting. They interviewed one of the "professional" groupies who called herself the "Butter Queen" . Her haircut was modified page boy with short straight across bangs in bottle platinum. She reminded me of a blond Betty Paige (with buck teeth). A definite forshadowing to punk (not the buck teeth, the hair)Certainly a drastic move away from the straight long hair parted in the middle hippie doo that the majority of girls in the film had.

The collars on the mens shirts were already super long and pointed and the womens clothing was surprisingly covered up. Skinny flared jeans and ethnic tops or flowy dresses/tunics. The audience tended to be more flamboyant than the artists (with Leon Russel as the exception). His signature top hat with big flowers was copied by men and women alike. Fringed suede sticks out in my mind.

The music was fun to listen to too!
