Make Up And Vintage Clothing

My grandmother said that the women in the 1920's used to take the color from wallpaper flowers, and use as rouge. I was wondering if anyone has a favorite make up memory. I know that make up changed a lot over the years, (Cleopatra eyes, white lipstick, etc) but the older make up seemed more interesting to me, and far more affordable. Tangee lipstick has been re introduced, but the price is scandalous ! It was an orangey color, and was supposed to be different on each woman. It turned red on me, and my sis got the orange tone. I was a Hot Pink lipstick addict, too. I wore it with any garment, no matter what color ! :duh2:

My favorite all time foundation was/is Max Factor's Pan stick. My mother almost killed me when I wore a bright blue eyeshadow put out by Steins Theatrical make up. (no longer in business). I loved Pot O Gloss, and all of the fun things. My trips to a make up counter now make my blood pressure go way up. $$$$

I was a BIBA girl...her clothing wasn't available in Oregon, but her full line of makeup was. Pricey, but looks not then available from anyone else. Smokey eyes! Brown lipstick! Ah, it was SHEER HEAVEN.

Everybody wanted THIS look...I even managed the hair, with the aid of henna and a killer perm.

I could kill for the old blush sticks in frosted colors. I have very dry skin, so powdered blush in a flat color is horrid for me to apply and often doesn't look good on me. But Avon used to have these great push-up blush sticks that were creamy, went on smoothly and were easy to blend, and looked great! I used to buy one of the pinks and one of the peachy tones, and use to complement whatever colors I was wearing. I think other companies had them, but Avon's were the best! I stopped using them years ago for lack of an Avon rep, but I think they only discontinued them a short time ago. But they fell out of favor long ago.

Ah, white lipstick--yes, I remember that, and my parents used to think I was nuts for wearing it. And dark blue mascara--that was a big rage when I was a teen--you wore it no matter what color your eyelashes were.

I liked using eyeliner that came in a a little cake. You would add a drop of water and use a little brush to apply it. It was very easy to apply, but if you cried then it would run down your face in very dramatic streaks! That wasn't such a bad thing in high school.

I just never got comfortable the using the liquid eyeliner, or the eyeliner pencils.

Bonne Bell Lip Smackers when I was a teen. Then while on a trip to the UK I bought a fabulous tin of Biba eyeshadows in bright shades of blue, hot pink, green... Used to layer that on when in my early 20's. Now it is in my Halloween make-up box!!

Great topic!!

I use a cream to powder blush - and an eyeliner that is powder that you apply with a brush and can use wet or dry. Both are available at Sephora. The blush is by Nars. I apply it with my fingers. The eyeliner is made by Cargo, and comes in a little tin. The brush that I use for the eye shadow has a flat straight top and takes a little getting used to but does a great job. I dip it in water and then in the eyeliner powder. Sephora makes great brushes, too.

I believe there are other companies that make these products. I used both products from Trish McEvoy for many years, but the colors I used were discontinued, so I asked about them at Sephora. I think Trish McEvoy still has these products in their line. Cliniique had a cream to powder blush about two years ago but discontinued it. That always happens when I find something I really like!

My grandmother never wore makeup but still had a drawer full of it when
I was little. One thing I remember was cake mascara. It came in a red plastic box that slid out like a matchbook with black solid mascara and a little brush next to it.

Maybelline

The red mascara container was Maybelline. Loved it, and they also had some great colors in liquid liner bottles. Cutex nail polish had the fake nail on the cap, and Helen Neushaefer had fake lipstick color caps. Remember Deep Magic cleanser ? That stuff was greasy !

I Remember some Holiday Magic ? make up that reps used to sell, and they boasted natural ingredients. I also need a cream rouge. The powder just settles into my age lines. I remember a nice wet or dry eyeshadow during the hippie days. Women painted their entire lids and browbones with the same color.

Germain Montiel made some nice shadows. I love the way the women lined their eyes during the flapper era. Tiny lips were the rage, but now the lips are almost too overly. Max Factors lip gloss was wonderful, as was Elizabeth Arden's lips gloss.
I think that many of the old companies are long gone. I tried to add a link on Maybelline, but if you Google some images on old Maybelline ads, you can find some memories long gone. I miss the packaging, and prices. :hiya:
