Man’s Suit - Age? - Bother to Dry Clean?

It’s a shame about this suit as it has all the tailor’s bells and whistles. The buttons at the end of the sleeves unbutton, the button holes are all hand stitched, there are pockets inside the pockets where appropriate and generally the sewing is painstakingly fine with nice finished details. However ... it has a fair amount of soiling and a moth hole or two near the crotch. When I was unbuttoning the sleeves one of the leather buttons popped off.

Does the silk pheasant lining mean anything? The vest is backed with that lining and I may just offer up the vest for the hipsters, as that is is very good condition. What a shame, because the rest is so beautifully constructed.

There are no cuffs on the pants, and a big old hem at the bottom of each leg. The zipper is metal and it buttons on the inside. (And I haven't a clue why my photos are suddenly so small.)

What a gorgeous lining! With the tweed it makes me think " huntin' shootin' and fishin' " if that phrase means anything. Clothes for the county set.

Sorry no help, but couldn't help admiring - I feel your dilemma!

That's a great suit, Amanda? How big are the moth holes? Can you mend/reweave (with the weave of the fabric it wouldn't be hard to do) them fairly easily and are they in a not-very-noticeable area, like on the inside of the pant leg or crotch area?

I think if you can repair the holes, I would have this cleaned--if your cleaner thinks he/she can release a reasonable amount of the soiling. The fabric and workmanship look of awesome quality. I know that whenever I've had ties with hunting motifs, they've sold very well. Don't know if the same holds true of suits, though, but it would be a shame to not save this cool suit.

The lining is "whole" - in that the sleeves of the jacket are lined, but with a white silky material, not the pheasant fabric. The moth holes could be closed up pretty easily. I got this "for a song" - so it's not a big deal, I just wasn't sure if men would be interested in something like this.

Amanda, I think it's a great suit but I'm worried about the moth holes. I now look at the crotch area first when I'm suit buying because it's an area you really don't want mends unless you can make them look invisible. I'm also worried that other moth holes may appear during the dry cleaning.

The good news is that tweed is great for hiding mends. I'd probably do it if I were you.
