Mark Your Calendars - Balenciaga Exhibit Coming to NYC!

This appeals to me more than the extravaganza shows they have right now for the millions of tourists - besides New York in fall is divine and hideous in summer!

I would love to see this but NYC is a little bit too far - especially sine I was just there in May.

Jonathan, the current show at the Met is very worth seeing and I think the sister show at the Brooklyn Museum sounds wonderful from what I've read. It opened the day before I left and I couldn't get to it. I'm not sure how long they run.

The problem with those summer costume extravaganza shows at the Met is that they are PACKED with tourists. I did not enjoy the Model as Muse exhibition partly because of the crowds. Also, I have seen some of the photos of the Met show and I find the hair incredibly stupid. Actually, overall, I hate New York in summer - all the New Yorkers that are there are pissed off that they don't have a place in the Hamptons and they take it out on the tourists! Believe me, I love New York, but the only time I have run into rude New Yorkers and bad serivce is during the summer -- the only place worse is Paris! lol

I was there early the day after the show opened so it wasn't too crowded. The hair actually works because the vingnettes are "staged" with period props from the Met Museum's collection. I enjoyed it. I thought the hair was over the top at first and then I got used to it.

I missed "The Model as Muse" - have the book. I saw most of the other Costume Institute exhibits from 2001-2007 including Poiret, Chanel, Liasons Dangereuse and Jackie Kennedy "The White House Years."

I know what you mean about New York in Summer. It was unseasonably warm when I was there in early May! I moved to Hawaii from New York - eons ago. I grew up in the Northeast and I do remember hot muggy summers and freezing cold winters. I went to Toronto in 1987 for the ASID National Convention and it was not exactly cool there in July, either - LOL. I think after so many years in Hawaii I tolerate heat better than cold.

Toronto isn't that much better than NY in summer - I stay away from there too! However, 1987 was particularly bad - it was one of the hottest summers on record. I remember it well because we didn't have an air conditioner and by the end of the summer I was in tears at night trying to get some sleep (you couldn't buy a windowbox air conditioner or even a fan anywhere!) We used to go to the movies just for the air conditioning and would pick the films with the longest run times. That was why I saw The Last Emperor and the The Unbearable Lightness of Being - just for the air conditioning!

:jawdrop: Oh dear, I'd love to see this! But no idea if I can make it... Am going to be in New Zealand the better part of November if all goes well, and December, January & February are the busiest months at work, with production of the new brochure and reservations for the new seasons... usually not a good time to take a holiday.

I've heard enough about summers in New York to never want to try it - it was already pretty hot & humid some of the days that I spent in Philadelphia earlier this month. Though in this case, while everybody was complaining, I was enjoying it since we've had such a cold, rainy May and beginning of June - I was just gagging for some summer weather!

looks like we may hit this in January.... :excited:

Bumping up as a reminder. I think I also saw that the exhibit will move to the DeYoung in San Francisco after New York with more garments on view. Lucky West Coasters!

Wah, I want to go to NYC! :why:

Tim and I have our tenth kissing anniversary in December and the original plan was to go there to celebrate but alas, with this GFC kicking the guts out of retail, everything is on hold.
