Mary McFadden Couture

I will be listing this Mary McFadden Couture. The top is very decorative, sequin covered, hand painted (I think) front & back.

My question is how to decide on a value. Is the hand painting a big plus? There are sequins missing, most noticeable is around the bust. Should I sell as is, or would finding someone to sew back the missing sequins be a good investment before selling? There's such a wide range in asking prices out there!:help:

I usually don't sell couture, so would appreciate your thoughts on this one.
Thank you, Alice

Those clear sequins sure were popular with high end 80s clothes. I have several dresses with that exact same treatment. BTW, just because Mary McFadden puts 'couture' on her label, it doesn't make it couture - I hate it when designers (Valentino did it as well), who know better, use the term incorrectly to refer to a higher end label that is still an off-the-rack dress. Couture means made to order, not ready-made, but it seems the meaning of the word is morphing into meaning an expensive dress with hand-sewn details and high-end finishing techniques - in other words not crap. At any rate, I see the skirt is that tight Fortuny-like pleated silk, so overall its a very typical McFadden style. I don't think she is particularly 'in' right now, but on the other hand I think that dress has a wearability factor to it that should appeal to today's woman looking for vintage to wear. I suppose if you want to get maximum price for it you should look for the missing sequins and replace them - are there any to steal out of the selvedges inside? I can't help you with the value -- its too volatile a market right now. Somewhere between $125.00 and $2,000.00 - how about that!

Jonathan,
"Between $125 and $2000." Funny, funny!!!!:hysterical: Thanks for a good laugh.
And thank for your information on couture and how it's been misused. I'll check around and see what I can find for the missing sequins. Whatever price I put on it, it will be a fun piece to have in my shop. -Alice
