Maui Tailors dressish romperish thingy

I just found this dress today and I am a bit befuddled by it- so obviously I had to buy it, photograph it, and show it to ya'll. It seems kind of like an expedition dress- maybe for camping or hiking or something? Which then makes me think that it was made before it was really acceptable for wemon to wear pants, but then the plaid makes me think of the 70s. Anyways, enough of my musings, it seems to be a heavyweight cotton/canvas material. The tag reads "Maui Tailors- Lazmi, karanja, Ahmeonogar". The selvedges are still on the fabric and read "NARAINS SULZEN" (I think). You can kind of see them in one of the photos below. All closures are buttons.

Thanks again everyone!
(P.S. If someone could tell me how to get that attachment button to function, I would really appreciate it)

Can't really help you out except to tell you that Maui is one of the Hawaiian Islands, but the other names mean nothing to me and are not Hawaiian names or places. Ditto the name on the selvage - no clue.

Women were wearing rompers way before the '70's, but it it was made in the US, it should have a care label and a fabric content label. The length does look like late '60's early '70's. It's cute!

Where I can help you is attaching your photos. When you start the new topic click on the icon that looks like a mountain and then paste the url to the photo that is being hosted on flicker. Like this:

Thanks Linn! I will try that attachment thing next time! My thoughts are that because there is not care label and because of the "Maui Tailors" label and some handstitching is that it was probably custom made for someone.

Could you do a close-up of the label, please. It looks more commercial to me than one a "tailor" would have used for custom work.

Thanks,

Linn

its really hard to tell on custom garments.

my GUESS would be late 70s with the collarless neckline and patch pockets, but that is purely a guess.

i know i've had custom garments sewn for me, as well as custom sewn for others, and it often is the case that a client has fabric of their mother's/grandmother's/etc and would like a garment (to wear to a wedding) in (a 1950s style), for example.

i had a client who was very long waisted and tall and simply could NOT buy off-the-rack a jumpsuit that fit her well, so i made her a couple. she approached me with sketches she had done, and wanted to wear one for a Christmas party she was throwing, so we made it of lightweight wool gaberdine, and she was GORGEOUS in it~

point being, that garment had elements of the 70s AND 40s and was done in the style that she wanted it, but not necessarily pertinent to the early 80s that she wore it in.

fwiw.

I agree with custom. I "Googled" and discovered that Karanja is a city and a municipal council in Washim, a district in the Indian state of Maharashtra - and Ahmednagar is the largest district in the Maharashtra state of India.

So now we know that it was not made on Maui!
