Hi there! I'm wondering if someone can help me confirm if this is mink fur? I believe it is a 1960's Maximilian New York fur shrug jacket, but just not sure on the fur. I have another very similar one that is a much warmer brown and which I am pretty positive is mink, but for this darker/red tint, I was not sure. Thank you so much!

Hi there, Very pretty. The color of the fur appears to be mahogany brown and the fur type is mink. The deep dolman sleeves with tightly cuffed wrists, the cutaway rounded front, the lining fabric and solid black color, the black label and size of the label(which was different than in the 60s), were all seen collectively in the ladder portion of the 80s and into the early 90s, and while it's okay to call this a shrug, I would also refer to it as a bolero.
Maximilian has been widely recognized over the years for fine furs. One of the originating co-founders; Ana Maximilian Potok, passed away in the later 80s but Maximilian continued on.
Among those dressed in furs by Maximilian was Nancy Raegan and Maximilian was the only fashion house to receive two Coty fashion awards in 1948 and 1965 for making fur fashionable. The Coty fashion awards were discontinued in 1985.

Thie was from a 1981 newspaper article.

This was a 1987 article after the Mrs. Maximilian Potok passed away.

Hi Caryn,

Wow, thank you for such a wonderful and thoughtful response! I so appreciate your time. The relative who I believed owned this fur died in the 70's, but it is possible it actually belonged to her niece if you think the 1980s is a better guess. Do you think this other Maximilian that I now possess is of similar age?

Always happy to assist, especially when it’s vintage :)
This second fur is a good one if it’s in good condition. It’s sable fur. It is older and I would date it to the 60s. Notice the difference in the color of the label, the hand stitching at the ends, and it appears to be slightly different in size too. Most labels in 60s fur garments were hand stitched as opposed to being machine stitched as shown in the first fur. Some furs may have had machine sewn labels at the time but it was less often than more and sometimes newer labels were hand stitched but they were machine stitched more often than less.
It looks like the label on the sable may have also been restitched but if so it looks like it was originally sewn by hand due to the absence of prior machine stitched holes which would be in a line and plentiful on each side. The label also has darkened which which is indicative of age.

You are most welcome. If you plan to offer these be sure to use your own content and describe them in your own words so that should someone ask you a question about what you wrote you will know the answer, and so that should viewers visit here they won't think that the content and words you used were copied, not based on you're knowledge, not trust buying from you, and worse think you're not really selling what you're offering, or anything at all. :)
