May I please have your opinions on altering this dress?

Hi everyone, I am going to be offering this dress soon and when modeling it on my manni I had the thought that it may look better with the bottom layer of the skirt cut off leaving the ruffled portion.
My selling mind is thinking that the younger crowd who is into the see through lace look now will like that better.
My collector mind though is thinking that I don't want to alter this piece of fashion history.
What is your opinion?

Please don't!!

What is cut cannot be uncut. You could show it with that section pinned up inside the skirt as a variation. But the current length would look perfect with espadrilles, or slim victorian style boots or booties.

What everyone else has said. It is a perfectly lovely and desirable piece as is, and too precious a piece of fashion history to chop off. In the absence of damage or butt-ugly tastelessness (let's face it, there are some of those in the vintage world), it would be a shame to cut it. It can be made to look "trendy" with accessories.

Thank you everyone. After seeing the photos I think I like it as is. I am glad I posted here to get your opinions on it. It would have literally hurt me if I had cut it. I feel like I just saved the poor dress by not cutting it, lol. How could I even have thought to cut such an old pretty piece? Where is the face with the hammer to hit myself with, lol.

Don't be so hard on yourself, you obviously wanted to make the right decision. You should be proud of yourself for having the presence of mind to question. I wish there were more folks like you :)

Do not alter. I just saw a picture on Adore Vintage's blog of a very stylish young woman wearing a Victorian dress and she looked amazing! Girls are buying these as is. Don't cut it!

I just visited Adore Vintage's blog and what a great blog and store! Thanks for turning me onto it. Wonderful :clapping:

I like the apron look. That's what it reminds me of. A summer lady serving lemonade, and delicate cookies. I wouldn't cut it, either.
