Hi,

I have several items that I am trying to measure where the sleeves are not stitched separately and I'd like to know how I go about measuring shoulder width and sleeve length properly. I thought I was being clever by doing one measure from the end of the collar to the bottom of the sleeve - which works when the collar is close to the neck, but doesn't on a scooped neck.

Any and all advice greatly appreciated!!!

I just measure from shoulder curve to shoulder curve giving the max measurement and maybe a smaller one. Does that make sense?

On men's clothing and this may work here, too, measure from the center back collar to end of sleeve.

Thanks so much Linda - I give that a try. Tricky business measuring.

Yes, and you have to explain yourself fully. Just like the lady who bought a dress from me and she said the bust was too small. I had said bust 36 inches . She said well...I wear a size 36C bra so I thought it would fit!! LOL

Oh dear! Well, I just sold a dress and mailed it last week (said a small prayer as I gave it to the post office) and I'm waiting to hear back. I measured that bust at least 10 times, just to be sure, sure - but I'll feel better when I hear everything is AOK.

With short cap sleeves cut with the dress, no shoulder seam, I don't usually give a shoulder width. If there are shoulderpads, there certainly can be a width estimated by the placement of the pads (even though they can be moved!). With short kimono sleeves, or cap sleeves, I don't even view the shoulder width as a going concern. Am I wrong or just not being as thorough as possible?

I just posted a dress suit where the dress has, I guess what could be called cap sleeves - they actually almost go straight out - and I did not put a shoulder width on that because I am of the same mind as you. I'm curious now, too.
