men\'s vintage smoking jacket - date?

Hello. New to your forum. I'm hoping someone here can help me "date" a men's smoking jacket? Mother told me that she bought it over 25 years ago but doesn't recall exactly where.

It's partially hand tailored, there is some sewing machine top stitching. It's fully lined (and can't see inside construction). It has an Asian theme pattern. Heavy satiny fabric - maybe rayon ?. The lining is lush. The sash has hand? braided ends with long fringe. What distinguishes it is that it has smallish shoulder pads under the lining. It also has exceptional construction. It's a deep purple-ly or deep deep blue (depending on the light). It has cuffed sleeves.

I have been around vintage women's fashion for well over 3 decades. And my mom was a professional seamstress so I am influenced by quality construction. But I have little knowledge of men's vintage. I'm feeling like it's 40s time frame. I'm not sure when asian influence textiles would have been popular in the states.

Any input on a good source to date the piece accurately would be much appreciated. I can provide more pictures (but my photography ability isn't stellar with dark items).

Thanks much
-K

ANY photography would be appreciated so we can see the cut of the garment... quality pictures help but something is even better! :-)

take the picture wihtout flash or with flash from far away and zoomed in so the light doesnt bounce back too bad :-)

Thank you. I am having trouble navigating the forum. Again. Not the best picture. I can take more tomorrow. And I only able to upload one picture at a time?

well you have to have the picture uploaded to an online ...loss of memory.. storage? like snapfish or whatever

then you can add as many as you want in one posting.. I do mine in paint though, I put them together then upload one "collage"

also to get back to do this click on edit on the top right hand corner of the box where your post is.. to add more pictures should be on your left top....

If not when you add a new reply dont use the little box at the bottom, that was a quick reply box, instead click on the little boxes just above this on the right... there are three one says New Topic, New Poll and Post Reply... Hit Post reply and it will look like the first forum you entered to ask your question where you can upload a single photo at the bottom...

Did I make that confusing?

to add numerous images you will have to have the url from where they are stored onthe internet... not sure how much you know with computers.. but you can rightclick a picture and then click on properties and highlight and copy the url... then paste that into the box that prompts you here on this forum

Jennifer. Thanks for all the help. I totally appreciate it. I need to take a few better pictures tomorrow and try and create a collage. I was just confused about the forum options, never used a forum, but the folks here are so knowledgeable. (I work in a research/software development team for 20+ years. They would be VERY disappointed in me at the moment.)

I'm hoping the two pic I uploaded help a little bit. I assume the braided sash may be a good detail to shoot. The inside is just a heavy smooth satin. The jacket appears to have never been used. Or nearly never.

Those shots should be fine.. others may ask for inside pictures... I am not weighing in beause men's items are not my forte' and I do not want to mislead you, but I thought I would get the ball rolling....

it appears 40/50ish to me... but I would deffinately wait to see what others say, as it could be newer (80s) and vintage inspired. I rarely come through on mens stuff... thats my next great undertaking for the new year :-)

Thanks Jennifer for all your help. I can guarantee this is not 80s fabric. But then I too don't know things about "boys" vintage. That's why I'm asking. It could have been made yesterday. I think it's a beauty actually. And many a MAN would be HOT in it :)

I updated the original post with a bit more detail. There are no labels. I suppose it could have been made anytime out of vintage fabrics? It looks like there was hand finishing work and signs of 'chalk' where the tailor/maker marked the fabric folds etc. Looks like it wasn't worn. It was well made. Much better than my handy work and I am a bit of a perfectionist when I sew.

I'll do some reading on line. This forum looks like like an amazing group!

I AGREE.. my hubby would look hot in it :-) but .. I do not think its new but it would not be ther firt time I was fooled.... I hope someone weighs in on the subject I am curious to find out and I don't think I can wait until tomorrow lol!
