Today I came across a lovely ladies wool suit labeled "Miller & Rhoads". It was super cute with a knee length skirt and a not quite cropped, button up jacket. The best part was the amazing mink collar that folded over the shoulders. Hard to describe- I'm sure there is a proper name for the styling. I didn't buy it since it was crazy tiny and I am, let's say "curvy". All I found about Miller and Rhoads was that it was a department store. Didn't see anything in the label resource. I kinda regret not buying it because it was so darn cute. Does anyone know of this brand?

Don't know anything about the label, but just from your description it sounds like maybe a 60s suit with a shawl fur collar.

The shorter jacket. Cut is fairly straight line/boxy as opposed to fitted like most 40s and 50s jackets?

Thanks for responding, Brenda! A shawl collar! Now I know what to call it! I guess the jacket would be considered straight. It wasn't fitted, but it wasn't quite boxy. And everything was fully lined and in great condition. It was about $50. I'm not a seller or anything like that, just a collector of all things beautiful. I've got the sneaking suspicion that I should have bought it, even though I couldn't fit it.

Heh...sounds like you have the bug alright!

Of course my estimate of date and term for the collar are only a guess based on your description. I would have to actually see it to be sure. Could even be 70s when the jackets became a bit more tailored again.

Miller & Rhoads was a higher end department store. They had one in Roanoke where I grew up. There was a delightful Tea Room on one of the upper floors where you could nibble on tiny sandwiches and watch live fashion shows. One of my girl friends and I would go there on Saturday and buy something like a tube of lipstick at the downstairs cosmetics counter, then go upstairs and pretend we were sooo grown up. Our fav lipstick was a light pink named "Miss Dior". Expensive for a teenager, but we saved up for our trips to downtown.

Oh wow. I live about 50 miles from Roanoke. My mother took me there shopping when I was a kid. It was our main shopping city until the late 1980s when malls started to open around here.

Miller & Rhoads was a high end dept store. Loved it and the little tea room.

I just love little stories like this, thanks for sharing!

OK. After hearing all of this amazing history about Miller & Rhoads, I am going back to the store to hopefully, buy that suit! If it's still there, I will post pictures of it to share with everyone. What amazing memories! I get nostalgic when I think about Glossar's department store, in Johnstown, PA. Reminds me of my impossibly chic grandmother. (All of her beautiful clothes were given to Goodwill when she passed away):(
