Miller's Riding wear catalog from 1966

Miller\'s Riding wear catalog from 1966

Went to a carboot sale this morning and it was a good one! Found a styrofoam head and a 1920's style hat display head which will be perfect for showing hats at the Bristol fair, a new old stock shop card with 12 vintage men's collar studs still on it AND a Miller's tack catalog from 1966- 1967!

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it as it's a bit unusual to find it over here as Miller's is a New York company. It's completely illustrated with Sam Savitt horse drawings and the PRICES!!!

A Hermes close contact saddle for $350 and now they cost into the THOUSANDS, most of the other English saddles are $250 and under including Kieffer , Crosby and Passier ones (for those of you who not into horses, those are top of the line saddle brands and cost $1000 and over these days).

Breeches are all flared although there are quite a few models saying that they have Lycra in them for "Power Stretch". The cheapest ladies pair is a pair of denim ones for $15.95 and the most expensive are a custom made pair for hunting at $90.00- most are in the $25- $40 range. The same size range is avaible in women's ones as there is today, 22"- 34" waist in short, regular and long lengths (there is even a size chart letting you know which size to buy accoridng to your height!).

OMIGOSH! And the boots! I paid about $165 for my field boots about 10 years ago and they were not even a top of the range brand. In 1966, I could have gotten a custom made pair of field boots with all the extras in the best leather and had $27.50 in change left over!!

Normal off the peg leather riding boots range in price from $24.00 to $60 with most of them being in the $24- $30 range AND not being made from cheap leather either.

Except for the prices not much has changed in tack over the years. Plastic curry combs, hoof picks, mane combs are still the same price as they were in 1966 too.
I had to laught at the plaid show blouses complete with matching OR contrasting choker and how you could order riding helmets in other colors than black, navy or brown. The helmets were safety approved either, one had padding that you could take out as the child's head grew!!

The bit selection isn't great- mostly pelhams, kimberwicks and eggbutt snaffles. Only three models of full cheek bits, two which are twisted and a fulmer.

LOL, I bought this to resell but this is another for the collection now! :spin:

As I read that I thought for a second you "bought" a Hermes saddle...
I'll bet you wish ehhhhh.... :)

I think you should definitely keep the catalogue!

It's amazing, isn't it, how the prices on fine leather riding goods have gone up? I'd keep the catalog for a great snapshot in history! Last year I sold my Dehner custom field boots for what I paid for them in 1972! And the only reason I couldn't get more for them was because of the size--they were teeny, which is why I didn't keep them, as my feet & calves have grown too large for them.... LOL!
