Several weeks ago I posted info about the Pattern Library at the U. of RI.
According to Joy Emery, the curator, they preserve the entire pattern and scan the design and small scale pattern grid to go with the catalog record. The entire pattern is available for in-house research.
Although the in-house research would be enormously valuable, it is used less than the design/scanned pattern grid so I encourage you to consider patterns that might not have all pattern pieces as well as those that do.
I sent lots of patterns from small pattern companies--many of which have gone out of business and some which Joy had not heard of. Again, review your patterns. If you aren't going to use them or sell them, send them to a good home.
