I already mentioned this in my last blog post which I linked here when Arte had all those amazing Belle Epoque-themed documentaries on. Kandersteg, one of the really picturesque towns up in the mountains here in the Berner Oberland region of Switzerland holds a "Belle Epoque Week" every year in winter. People dress up in style and there are all sorts of events, like train rides in old carriages, balls, dinners, sports (skiing, curling, ice skating, ice hockey, tobogganing), and costume competitions etc. The whole town dresses up and it's certainly a sight to see!
Here's a short film from Swiss TV that shows what's going on this week (sorry, all in Swiss German): http://www.srf.ch/player/tv/videoem...width=640&height=360&mode=embed&autoplay=true
As it happens, an old school friend of my mom's lives in Kandersteg and participates every year with her husband. She makes all her outfits herself, and you can see her in the video, she's the tall lady in the white cape and mustard-colored skirt being interviewed. I think the style suits her perfectly, and I'm always amazed at her talent - there's so much work in this! Her husband is also in it, he's seen in the little curling seen, the guy in the knickerbockers.
