Sarah posted about the reopening of the Gallery of Costume in Manchester and I visited their website. They have a nice digital library where you can search using individual keywords, or check out categories HERE

I enjoyed the Sports and Leisure section.

This is an archery jacket in their collection - 1790 - 1795

This is a cycling outfit - 1895 - 1900

And a Bathing dress - 1870 - 1880

According to the text, some women were still uncomfortable when the wet wool clung to their bodies and they wore a loose form of a corset under the swimming clothes.

" In August 1868, for example, The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine recommended a new bathing corset, describing it as a "useful invention for ladies who dread to appear in undress."

Great selection, Amanda! That archery jacket is made of such curious fabric, almost like an oilskin. In the catalogue description its called 'glazed worsted' - perhaps an early form of waterproofing?

In the sports section I totally fell for the beach pyjamas, and did you see those hilarious Janzten trunks with the big arrow? Subtle? I don't think so!
