Not sure I agree with most of these choices but it's an interesting topic:

I do think 3-4 of them are outstanding, but those are all 25 years old - or older!

Agreed: the vintage styles are the best ones.

The writer seems to consider "party dress" to be a generic term for "dressy dress". Many of those would sit better under the descriptions Cocktail Dress, Evening Dress, Ball gown or (in the case of MM's Seven Year Itch dress) a dressy day dress. I'm not sure what I'd call J Lo's outfit - looks best for martinis by the beach?

But that's just my opinion - in the past, a dress was designed for a particular type of occasion. Nowadays, almost anything seems to pass as Special Occasion wear.

Thats quite an eclectic mix and I agree with Nicole, there seem to be few party dresses in the lot but lots of cocktail or even black tie wear.

To my mind a party dress is a pretty frock on the semi formal side... sort of like this

I typically HATE todays fashion... its about being sluty and calling it fashion... who can show the most skin? Its morbid the way our minds have warped and that people accept it. I mean look at haloween costumes... it is basically tunring into a but cheek showing contest for females.. even the "preteen" costumes are getting in on the action,,, at least thats the way it is here in America. It made me SICK to see little girls in booty clothing and parents tellign them how cute it is. And the red carpet glamour doesn't help..

ok nuff said sorry to rant!

Nicole, I totally agree! Especially on J.Lo's dress... All in all, this is a strange list!

My personal faves? Marilyn, Audrey, Michelle, Diana. Though they're all not what I would define as a party dress either (Melody, yours is absolutely fab - and quite "the" party dress). Besides... Di's dress wasn't black, but a very very dark blue! I admit I have two books just on Di's outfits. Crazy? Well, I still think she dressed fabulously most of the times, and I still like looking through those books!
