Hello.
I have a very unusual question. Are the clothes in the photo mourning? It raises a lot of questions for me.
1 The lady is sitting, the child is standing nearby. 1869 approximately
2 Woman, bugle bead embroidery. 1897?
3 Woman in black with shiny buttons, circa 1889
4 Three people in the photo. Date unknown, after 1900
With respect and hope for help

Thank you for sharing your photographs. Based on the sepia toned photos, there really is no way of knowing for sure if they are dressed for a mourning period. They all wear dark colored clothing, but we cannot know what actual colors they actually are. Even if they are all wearing black, that was a common color for many types clothing in the 19th century, black does not necessarily mean mourning.

I agree with Barbara. Darker colored clothing was more practical for wear over years. Most people, unless they were wealthy, had one or two outfits that were their "good clothes" for church or other special events.
