OK, maybe it's my inner geek showing, but I love a superhero action movie...and Iron Man fit the bill perfectly. It's really one to go to the theater to see, to take in the effects and the sound properly. I do a lot of rentals, but save the DVD for the comedies and dramas-this one's best suited for big viewing.
Having grown up in the 80s, I have watched several Robert Downy Jr movies, and I have to say it's great to see him back on screen and CLEAN! He's lookin' mighty fine in this one, and his roughened edges and new mature handsomeness contribute nicely.
I enjoyed the backstory, the setup, which explains what brought him to become Iron Man. Once Iron Man makes his appearance, the effects really kick in, as does some much needed comic relief both through RDJ's wit and interplay with the technology that is his biggest asset.
I wouldn't take anyone less than a mature 10 yr old, since there are some rough scenes dealing with the Taliban, war, and weaponry, plus a bit of intoxication on the part of the pre-Iron Man RDJ. I don't recall a dirty word, nor were there any overly racy scenes (just one quick smooching scene).
All in all, though, it was fun, interesting, funny and well paced. I know I'll watch it again, and look forward to the rumored sequels.
I'm also happy to see director John Favreau venturing into bigger movies, although I hope he doesn't quit making the smarter, lower budget stuff.
Oh, and if you do go see it, stay until after the credits are done for an extra scene.
