Hello,
I am looking for the Mr. John's rights owner or representative. Mr. John (or John P. John) is an American milliner, very famous the world of hat in the 40's and 50's. Do you have any information on this matter please ?
Thank you in advance !
Best,
Gauthier

If it is regarding published photos, his estate is likely not going to have rights to those. Those would be in public domain. I am very familiar with his career, and know a private collector who bought a lot of things from his salon, including the exterior signage and interior furnishings. She may have some of his business records. Not sure what you are looking for the right to? Just wondering.

Hello !
Thank you very much for your answer. I will need the rights holder(s) authorization(s) for a reproduction of the image of Mr. John's hat. Is it possible to send me the mail of the person who bought Mr. John's things from his salon please ? My address mail is the following : [email protected].
Thank you in advance.

I don't think that person will be able to help you. Even if they possess Mr. John's physical property, that does not give them rights to photographs taken of Mr. John hats in the past.

Copyright laws can vary from one country to the next. Here in the U.S., the photographer owns the photo rights unless they were working as an employee at the time - in that case, the employer would own the rights. This article on copyright law is from a website for photographers and may be helpful to read.

These days there are corporations, like Getty, that have bought up rights from many photographers and smaller companies - they charge fees for use of the photos they "own".

Thank you very much for the information provided and the clarification regarding Copyright law.
We have already asked the photographer and the magazine for permission to reproduce the cover.
I'm now trying to contact Mr. John's rights holder because of the representation of the hat on the cover.
If the collector doesn't hold the rights to the objects made and imagined by Mr John, I've asked for his contact details to find out if he/she knows of any possible successors to Mr John.
Thanks again!

It's great that you're interested in Mr. John's work! Unfortunately, I don't have specific information about his rights owner or representative. Have you tried reaching out to vintage fashion organizations or archives? They might have more information or contacts related to Mr. John's legacy.

Hello !
Thank you for your answer ! I have tried to contact several museum exposing Mr.John's works but I did not get any rights holders contacts yet.
Do you know which vintage fashion organizations or archive I should contact ?
Thanks again !

I am 99.99% sure you do not need to contact anyone with rights to Mr. John in order to use an image of a hat which is shown in a publications cover photo. You say you have asked the magazine which should be enough and that may not even be needed. It is not the hat itself, but an image of the hat. And the hat itself was mass produced so anyone can take a picture of a hat they own and no permission is needed from the milliner.

Your request seems odd, but maybe that's a European thing?

You're welcome! You might try contacting the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the Fashion Institute of Technology's museum. Both have extensive archives and might have leads on rights holders for Mr. John's works. Good luck!
