Can anyone help me identify the coat shown in pics ie fur; approx date: maker, it was my mother in laws (born 1912) the pelts are 20cm x 3.5cm.
It looks expensive but she did not have much money, although there was a rich aunt where it may have come from. There are no labels in the coat,
Thanks in anticipation C

I doubt we would be able to tell you the maker of a fur coat, the styles are much the same from one company to another generally. Only the style of manufacture and a few details may hint at a higher end or average maker. I do like your button - I think it's unusual. Is the embroidery on the lining floral or initials? can you provide a close up please?

Hi C, the best thing would be to bring it to a furrier who could at least let you know what kind of fur it is and the condition.

I agree with Melanie above that the maker would be pretty impossible. If you haven't already done so, you should check the inside pocket, there is often some info contained on a label in these.
Also, if you can see the backside of the fur underneath the lining, there is at times stenciled writing on the actual pelts which may indicate the type of pelt.

Thanks for all your interest the buttons are decorative only; fastening is achieved using hook and eye inside coat. C

Hi poppys vintage clothing

apologies for not responding earlier to your suggestions; unfortunately we are in Torquay and furriers are a bit thin on the ground. I have checked inside pocket which is a vertical 'slit (see pic). Nothing in there The lining is very well sewn and I think it would perhaps not be a good idea to attack it. Anyway thanks for your help

I see you were also looking for a date for this. I associate shawl collars with the 50s and 60s, perhaps someone else may be able to help date this, based on style. My guess would be mid 50s to mid 60s, but someone else may have a better idea.

The sleeves are full length, never heard of nutria thank goodness for google, my first thought was beaver! it seems nutria can be beaver or coypu. I thought the size of the pelts (20x3.5cm) would be an important clue but nobody has commented on this. thanks everybody for your help
