Must see film on TCM Thursday

Turner Classic Movies is airing "The Women" (1939) on Thursday at 11:45am. If you've never seen this film, tape it if you can! The costumes are by Adrian and, with a cast of all women, it is just a treat for anyone who loves vintage clothing. There is a fashion show in the middle of the film.

From "Hollywood Costume Design" by David Chierichetti:

"(Norma) Shearer was noticeably plumper in 'The Women" so Adrian raised her waistline and made her skirts fuller. Reflecting the great interest in 'Gone with the Wind', Shearer wore an 1860's influenced ballgown, the enormous crinoline harmonizing with her chubby arms. For the climax of the film, Adrian made Shearer in gold lame confront Joan Crawford in gold sequins; .....Crawford's glitter out-dazzled her."

I've left out the part that gives away the end of the movie. I thought Adrian's designs for this film were very fashion forward, and we see his influence in styles that will become popular in the early 40's.

Enjoy!!

Thanks Jody!

I have never seen it. Is it adapted from Chekov's "The Women". Or am I thinking of something else? I think it must be something else!

I've seen this one...it's black and white until the fashion show scene, then it's in dazzling color.
It's an odd look into the life of women back then, much different than today.

Apparently this is the film which most inspired Ossie Clark as a student! I'd be very interested to see it, eventually!!

OMG, The Women!!!!!!!!! :hysterical:

Oh L'Amour! L'Amour!!!!

The divorce train to Reno!!!!

Jungle Red!!!!

That scene when they are at the gym exercising!!!!

The fashion show!!!!

:hysterical: It's so over the top and totally campy!!!

I actually own a copy of this movie!!! It's a cult classic favorite with a core group of friends and I!! The first time we watched it, we all just about peed our pants laughing!!

The costumes are outrageous and totally divine but the dialoge will have you rolling on the floor

Don't miss it!! It really is a must see. :clapping:

~Maureen (who is :hysterical: just thinking about it!!)

Thanks for the head's-up - unbelieveably, I've never seen this. But I will soon via the magic of Tivo.

Thanks again, I know this is a 'must see' ~

I'm watching it right now - still in the opening credits so you're spared a running commentary. Oh no, wait, the animals associated with the characters!!! What a riot! Obviously if I'm looking for subtlety I should look elsewhere - but I ain't (Blanche), I ain't - I'm looking for style! :)

Chris - I'll put this on a videotape & pop it in the mail ~
