My fashion connection

I have dinner with my Aunt Alice every 2 weeks. (This is the same lady whose wedding photo I posted in another thread). She's 86 now, the oldest member of my family and the last survivor of her generation. She's still mentally sound and in pretty good health.

I love to hear her tell stories about my late parents and grandparents. I wish I had paid more attention and asked more questions when they were still alive.

Anyway, a few weeks ago we were talking about my grandfather. He had worked in several careers during his life, and I knew that at times he had owned a tailor shop and a dry cleaners. I was surprised though when she told me that during the 1940's he had worked for a famous Hollywood fashion designer - but she couldn't remember the name. I asked if it was Christian Dior; she said no, but someone who was just as famous at the time.

Tonight she finally remembered, it was Gilbert Adrian! This was exciting for me because I actually knew who that was. I wouldn't have recognized the name a few months ago.

It's funny how something I learned on an internet bulletin board has helped me to connect with my grandfather's history.

I just wanted to share the story and say thanks to you all.

WOW!!!! That's amazing. Adrian would have been the first name that popped into my head. Someone posted a "what would you like to own if you could have any vintage fantasy fulfilled recently and I know I said an "Adrian Suit" - of course I'd take an Adrian anything!

You might enjoy the book, "Gowns by Adrian" - http://www.amazon.com/Gowns-Adrian-...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1239946601&sr=1-1

Pretty pricey but maybe one of the used copies is in excellent condition. I have good luck with abebooks.com, also.

Thanks! I will certainly make it a goal to at least see an Adrian outfit close-up!

I don't want to give the impression that my grandfather was involved with the design work; my aunt said that he hand-sewed hems, and I'm sure there was a small army of people who did such work.

For those of you who remember the "Seven Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game, you are all just a few degrees separated from Adrian.

(You know me, I knew my grandfather, and he worked for Adrian).

I mentioned that to my aunt. She said it reminded her of an old song "I Danced With A Man Who Danced With A Girl Who Danced With The Prince Of Wales."
