My first Vintage Hairdo PHOTOS tell me what you think...

Good afternoon.

PLEASE forgive the pictures no makeup... yuck up close lol!

Tonight we have a Christmas party and I am wearing a Silver 50s lurex and black Cocktail style dress. After watching 100s of youtube footage on creating a pinup hair do (even though this is more of a 40s look) I decided to give it a whack. So last night ( I have never flat ironed or used bobby pins in my life and 2-3 bad attempts at curling my hair!) I decided I can do that! I got up and practiced a victory roll, took about 10 tries before I got an even barrel, one that would be acceptable. I then realized that this is the same way they do pin curls so I popped about 20 in my head (took about 30 minutes but I am a newbie) covered my head with a scarf and went to sleep. So I did a practice run before tonight, when I officially try to make it look good. I think it turned out all right. I haven used any hair spray or anything to hold down fly aways, this was literally a 6 minute tack job to see if I could do it!

So what do you think? any advice to offer? I can't really add more elements as I am new to curls, bobby pins and hairspray in general!

Thank you all!

I do wish I could get a clean, bigger, Victory roll but this should do... how long do pin curls last?

Wow! I am very impressed for your first time effort. The only advice I have (from my very limited hair experience) is to use a rat tail comb to get really nice crisp parts.

You are going to look fabulous tonight and I hope you share pics of you all gussied up!

wow - a fine first effort. Get out the hairspray and you will be good to go!
I think if you go on and spray the curls, they will hold longer- depends on your hair

rat tail comb got it!

yeah I am going to use hot rollers in an hour if the pin curls have fallen, then I will hairspray to set.. this was a quicky to see if this is what I wanted to attempt tonight lol thanks for the encouragement.. takes some guts to make the transition when you are very self conscious and general like to "blend in" nothing about rockabilly blends in hehe but I love it so far... just trying to get some confidence before I walk into the lions den... Its a party for the staff on my husbands base (military, Navy) so I want to make him proud of course.....

Jennifer -

Have a great time tonight, and please share photos of the finished product. I would love to be able to try this with my hair but it would never work!

Great first efffort. I think for height curling the whole head then teasing hair for height then two tons of bobby pins and hairspray. You need a bit more height at the crown. Its hard to work with straight hair. Only speaking from recent experience.

Love your eyes. The back of the hair is awesome. Teasing the hair after curling also lets the do last longer.

How about adding some cotton under the front roll. I think they did at the time work with peices for height.

That's pretty good for your first shot!! As a hairdresses by trade I have a couple of pointers for you and I have included my favorite Youtube pin-up tutorials below so you can take a look at those too.

first of it is best not to work on fresh clean hair. 2 day hair is best, but if you do have fresh clean hair you will want to add a little something to get rid of the slip and slide effect. I would add a little mousse to your dry hair and then blow if completely dry with your head flipped upside down for volume.

You will definitely want to use a rat tail comb as neat parting is essential! If you don't have one, use a letter opener or dull pencil, what ever will get you a clean line.

If your hair is fine or thin you will need to do some backcombing/teasing. Take the piece of hair that you want to work with and tease it a few times at the root area straigt up and down and then gently along the length. This will get all of the hair to kind of grasp together when you are trying to roll it and it will not fall flat to the side or seperate. You can then pull the hair gently in one direction or another while gently teasing the length and mold it in the direction that you desire. It also helps to make a curl with a curling iron and then roll it. Make sure that you are curling it on base which means that when your hair is wrapped completely around the iron that the iron sits atop of the base of that hair grouping and not to either side. Onbase curls = volume!! If you are using hot rollers the same rule applies!!!

Use hairspray while your are styling and not just as a finishing touch. Spray lightly each piece of hair before you roll it. It will help control flyaways and keep your hair together. Use a light hold or working spray for this.

Best of all have a great time tonight, you will certainly be a knockout!!
