Mysterious couture jumpsuit.

I know this is a long shot, does anyone think this resembles a certain designer's work?

It has a Clair zipper, so I think it's French. It's made from Sari silk, with little peacocks on it.

All the other garments at the estate sale sale were high quality, with a handful of long forgotten couturiers. Madam Irene, Maria Antonelli, and a few others.

I think this is an unusual garment, I'd really like to find out who did it!

Thank you in advance!

Sandi

Sandi, we're going to need more pictures to be able to help you - can you provide information on the type of seams & finishing, is it lined? does it have any labels. What makes you think it is couture? Does it have signs of couture workmanship? (perfectly hand sewn details, thread covered findings etc.)

It is not lined, but it is hand made. Silk backed Sari silk, gossamer weight. No labels. I'm sure it was part of a set.

I believe it to be bespoke, or designer, because everything thing else from the 50's at the estate sale was high quality. I found a 50's Dior garter belt, at Tina Leser silk pants set, Maria Antonelli two piece dress, two evening hoods made by a Madam Irene in San Francisco. Two French bras that I can find no information on. Everything appears to be early 50's.

To me, this jumpsuit looks remarkable, as I rarely come across pants ANYTHING, that old.

I hope this helps!

Thank you!

Sandi

Hi Sandi, I cant help with who the designer was of your piece, but it looks to have been made to order for the original owner by a seamstress- but not to couture standards , especially the finishing of the darts . I do wonder if the pants were originally lined as well?
That doesn't mean its not a fascinating piece and such a great colour !

Thanks for showing us this, it is quite lovely and interesting. It does not appear to be couture, but is a beautifully made garment and likely made for the owner to fit her exact measurements.

I get a sense of late 40s to very early 50s for this. There was a strong influence of India designs in textiles and fashion at the time, often credited to Jawaharal Nehru becoming the first Prime Minister of India (1947).

India was a very visible and more powerful force in global politics for the first time. If you look in some of the old fashion magazines of the time you will see examples of this in India patterns which influenced American designers of the time.

I can see this in an issue of 1950 Vogue, worn by some California woman, with gold jeweled sandals and lots of bracelets, at a cocktail party or dinner on the patio. Wonderful!

Sari dresses were VERY popular 1954/1955 and I wonder if this was one of those evening things that had a separate full skirt attached to a belt so it looked like a full evening gown from behind. Not unlike the dress Givenchy did for Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina in 1954 but it was a tight skirt with a full attached skirt at the back. It's definitely hand made, which is nice but it does look like its missing something, either a jacket or some kind, or a full skirt would look very chic.
