This looks very much like the work from the Phillipines.

the shirts made from this kind of fabric are known as barong tagalog.

if you go to wikipedia you will see a lot of information regarding these.

here is the description of the fabrics used.

"The finest shirts are made from a variety of indigenous fabrics. They have a sheer appearance and the best are custom embroidered in delicate folk patterns :

Piña fabric is hand-loomed from pineapple leaf fibers. Traditional piña weavers in the country, however, are dwindling, making the delicate piña cloth expensive and highly prized. They are used only for very formal events.

Jusi fabric is mechanically woven and was once made from abacá or banana silk.

Banana fabric is another sheer fabric used in formal occasions. It comes from the Visayan island of Negros. Hand-woven from banana fibre, the embroidery on this type is usually of a geometric design."

Thank you for this information Mary Jane! I have seen and held some pineapple leaf fabric, and even though it was decades old it smelled of pineapple!

I hope to add some of these unusual fibers to the fabric resource (#71 on the list right now).

Now I want one made out of pinapple leaf but it might be dangerous I agree I'd want a Pina colada. Thank you so much for all the information on the different types of fabric I am so excited to hopefully find more. And thank you Trish this forum is where I learned just about everything I know about purses and accessories so I just had to share with all of you to thank you for helping me find all these beautiful pieces of history.
