Hi,

I couldn't find out much about this name and also wondered about the date of the sweater. It looks pre-50s to me. Any info would be appreciated!

Thank you~

Ok, my Finnish isn't that good, but I got the gist of the Wikipedia page, and I've also seen worse than this particular Google translation, especially considering the very special Finnish grammar :). Trikoo would be the Finnish word for jersey (from the French "tricot") - so the company name does translate to Finnish Jersey. The company was founded in Tampere, which was THE centre of textile and shoe production in Finland for decades. They were strong in producing their own and also exported a lot to the USSR. Some of the factories were right in the city, as they were built to use the power of the river flowing through the city (I've been there and seen the old Finlayson factory building). Finlayson bought Suomen Trikoo up in 1983. Finlayson is still one of the major textile companies in Finland, and they do their own designs and all kinds of home textiles - not unlike Marimekko, but less well-known internationally and I think they export less. The name Suomen Trikoo was used until 1996. I found a few old ads and fashion shots for Suomen Trikoo in one of my books, ranging from the 30s to the 70s, but nothing showing anything like this sweater. It seems they produced all sorts of knits - fine jersey fabrics, chunky sweaters like yours and even hosiery.

Hi everyone~

I came up with limited info and had forgotten about the RN/WPL thing. It is interesting about R.H. Macy and I guess that means the sweater is older than I originally thought.

Thank you to everyone for your input and info. I appreciate it.

Karin - wow on that info:)

I've read that WPL numbers (wool product labelling) were only issued between 1941 and 1959, though they could still have been used after they were issued in 1959. If so, the sweater could be newer than 1959 but not older than 1941. Here's an ebay guide on the subject. It also strikes me as unlikely that Finland were exporting to the USA during WW2 - and this must have been made for export.

Been away a few days :)... No, Finland was definitely not exporting to the US during WW2 - they were an ally of Germany, and from what I know, most of their exports after this first went to their neighbours. I have this huge book on the history of Finnish fashion photography here that would probably have a lot of interesting facts, but... it's all written in Finnish :hysterical: except for a short 4-page recap in English at the end. I just bought it because of the gorgeous pictures - my knowledge of Finnish is very basic.
As I've visited Tampere too, I did learn a bit about that city's history. Tampere wasn't just a centre of textile production by the way, but also of shoe production, and they have a very nice shoe museum. Finland had a strong industry, producing whatever they could in their own country, so that there is quite an interesting history and also a lot of interesting brands to discover. Caught between East and West as they were until 1989, their situation was quite a special one too politically.
