Hi,
Can someone please help me date this coat/jacket that I have. I seen on a website that this style of tag was used in the 1930's to 1960's. Not sure were my jacket falls. Scans of the tags include in this post.

I appreciate any help!

Thanks again for the link Joules. Sorry for my bad pictures. This garment is a U.S. naval uniform. But not sure what it really is. I just pick this up today and could use a little cleaning.

It's a suit jacket - I don't think the lapels are big enough to be '40s, so I think more likely '50s but perhaps if you look for naval uniform experts you'll get more information? Uniforms aren't as subject to fashions as other styles are.

The trousers would help too, but I guess you don't have them. Are there any other labels?

Thanks again. I collect navy items from ww2 and earlier and have a large collection of uniforms from those era's. But this one really has me stump, because I can not I.D. the insignia on this jacket. That's why i'm trying to find what era this could be from. I really do appreciate the help and if anyone has some thing navy related and needs help I may be able to help.

No other labels and don't have the pants or skirt. Maybe a female's uniform? I do have a ww2 females uniform (WAVES), should compare it with this one. Yes the lapels look bigger on this one.

A ladies jacket will have shaping around the bust and waist - if you measure it, it will help. It doesn't look like it has shaping though. Also, a ladies jacket will have shorter sleeves and narrower shoulders. If you (or someone else) can try it on, you'll soon see.

I like your '40s uniform! Very smart.

Yes, no shaping. Well at least I know it's not a felmale's uniform.

Thanks, I got her 1940's shoes also.

The insignia is US Naval Intelligence Service. The jacket style looks post WW2.

Thanks for the reply,
I was thinking Naval Investigative Service, but someone said they thought they did not wear uniforms. So (US Naval Intelligence Service) that may be possible. Did you find a reference for the insignia?
1966 - NAVAL INVESTIGATIVE SERVICE
In February 1966 the name Naval Investigative Service (NIS) was adopted to distinguish the organization from the rest of ONI. Under the Director of Naval Intelligence, the new command consisted of only three functional organizations: the Director NIS and his headquarters staff; Naval Investigative Service Offices, each headed by a military commanding officer, and NIS Resident Agencies which were the basic operating components
