This is a very old style -- an ancient Egyptian wirework in the form of a collar, and still crafted today. I'm sure it has a name, but nothing comes to me at this moment. Perhaps one of the joolies will know.
The metal looks like German/Nickel Silver (not a true silver as you may know, but an alloy), most likely Central Asian in manufacture. You are correct, in that they are made by hand. I used to make these years ago, and it is one of the first lessons provided in wireworking.

OK, I'm flipping through this old artifacts book, and found a similar tomb piece, referred to as "spiral jewelry". Somehow, that doesn't sound complete enough, but I'll keep looking.

I thought Egyptian or Turkish....similar in style to the jewellery my uncle brought back from his merchant travels for my Nan in the early 1950's..
